Don't Bother

This was a massive disappointment.
Located high up adjacent to the A34 at Hinksey/Botley, the views of the spires of Oxford are superb.
However, it otherwise fails to deliver.
The course is not well-maintained. There are bunkers that have been GUR for two years or more. Many greens are in poor shape. Tee-boxes, even after the extended lock-down and zero use, are unavailable and mats are in use on several.
No course Marshalls, so plenty of young lads in non-golf clothing, including several who were two or more players using one set of clubs.
Bins overflowing at several points.
Clubhouse like an old agricultural building/shed, serving poor machine coffee.
All felt extremely half-hearted & impoverished, and reeked of under-investment.
I shall not be going back until a major amount of money & effort has gone into improving it.
This club, given it's location, and topography could be amongst the finest in Oxfordshire, but at the moment it is definitely in the bottom tenth percentile.
My advice is don't visit.
And ?32 for a buggy is absolutely extortionate.

Reply:
This is more of a trolling from an anonymous competitor (?) than a review, so beware! For any doubters, refer to other reviews and read the following. A couple of weeks before the date of this review we had recently hollow tined and top-dressed the greens, this is an important part of keeping the greens free of disease and well-drained as most experienced golfers know - hence everyone normally gets that. They were actually playing quite fast throughout April and have continued to improve. The course has been undergoing continual investment and improvement over the past few years, including the redevelopment of some of the tees which are being enlarged due to the increased number of golfers. Similarly, we are installing better drainage in the bunkers to ensure they remain dry and playable in the long-term. It is tempting to just leave them now it is dry, but October will be here before we know it. We have a relaxed dress code and are proud of this policy. The clubhouse is a converted milking shed and whilst not grand is very comfortable and welcoming. We also don't charge £32 for a buggy, so there appears to be a fair bit of misdirection in the reviewers comments! David Brimble, Director

Not great - but cheap at twighlight

Booked a twilight tee time which was very well priced. Really nice people working there. No balls were available for the range when we arrived which was disappointing.

Lots of the tees were on fairways not on tee boxes and they were rock hard and sandy with lots of deep divots which had not been replaced. Greens were surprisingly slow and wet considering the weather (30 degrees in August) and fairways were mixed, some great lush green and trimmed some rock hard dying grass and grass cuttings left out

Overall - cheap and cheerful golf with a nice layout of holes and some great views and really welcoming staff with cold beer on tap. A good one to go round with some beginners wanting a quick round

Scenic course offers a good challenge

Course is looking the best it has done for a few years. Greens, fairways and light rough are all well-maintained, thanks to the tireless efforts of the greenkeepers. Some more bunkers have been brought back into play. The bunkers at Hinksey will never be great without the sort of investment the club just doesn't have. However, it's good to have more bunkers at least playable. The views remain one of the most attractive features of the course. If you haven't tried it, give it a whirl. It's a friendly, un-stuffy club and well worth a visit.

So much improved

Hinskey Heights is going from strength to strength. The greens are in the best condition I have ever seen them and plays great. A bargain.
