terrible condition
It's been a couple of years since I last played clays and my return found it in poor condition. The greens were desperately slow with scorch marks, barren areas and felt like moss in others. the semi was grown too long and had an abundance of white flower heads - I lost 6 balls! The tees were scruffy (1 tee is off a mat - in June), the bunkers had little sand and missing rakes and there were few yardage markers. Massively overpriced at £27 and they wouldn't match the teeofftime price of £17 even though there wasn't anybody behind us (except a 4ball Lady comp we waved through....while looking for our balls - AGAIN! We complained but instead of immediate action being taken, we've been offered to write to the MD.(Round played: Jun 2017 - Score: 99 Handicap: 14.2)

We could have replicated the Clays green experience by buying several Asda Value sponges, fixing them together and getting the putter out.
This is probably a decent course in the summer but, if you don't fancy having that much mud on you that even the Predator couldn't see you, DON'T PLAY IN THE WINTER!

Now, before I start, let me make clear that I appreciate that in no way can a golf club be held responsible for the weather and Mother Nature. However, I do believe they have a responsibility to their guests and more so their members (as well as themselves for future financial prosperity) to provide accurate course information AND the self respect and common sense to reduce or cancel play if conditions are intolerable.
After a couple of days of rain in the area, we suspected a damp track and possibly the odd temp green, winter mat tee box and even play from the first cut rough rather than fairways (which is often requested on decent courses following poor weather). We got a phone call the day before our booking date to advise that buggies would not be allowed and we would be off winter mats. "No problem" we thought. No mention of what we would find....
We got there after no morning rain for our post midday tee time. I can only describe the course as a mud bath. The first hole had a small pond developed in a slope of the fairway (approx 40 foot in size) the fairway was a bog and the rough was just unplayable. We thought it might just be in a bad water catchment spot and carried on to the par 3 second. The bunkers around the green were GUR in 2 foot of water and the green itself was like walking on porridge. Ruined.
This carried on throughout our round with only 2/3 holes playing ok and the 16th and 17th out of action entirely.
We weren't off winter mats....instead the tee positions had been moved onto the start of each fairway. Only a few yards for some, for others it made the hole 50+ yards shorter. And EVERY tee area was devoid of grass and was a soggy muddy mess from where endless people had trampled.
Very few bunkers were not water logged or GUR. Tracks between holes were a boggy mess and tedious on the legs. The greens moved under foot and were a slushy debacle.
Now, as I say, I appreciate the weather is controlled by nature. But if its this bad. CLOSE THE COURSE!!! Don't have the lack of respect for paying customers to provide little information and make them endure a round. I dread to think what your members make of the state of the course as you allow people to ruin it by simply walking on it.
The place would be nice if it was cared for and respected and used responsibly.
I was testing the place for a possible society visit. That will not be happening and we won't be visiting again.
Worst course conditions we've ever played. It simply shouldn't have been open.

IMPROVING
The Greens are in really good condition, considering the weather conditions and the course is looking a lot more tidy, as I gather it is under new ownership. It's a friendly Club.Reviewer Rating
