Great heathland course. Picturesque and quiet except for birds singing. No sand bunkers but the heather, gorse and banks protecting the greens offer an equivalent challenge. Didn't play well but still thoroughly enjoyed my round and am looking forward to returning to do the course justice. Club house is well situated for views and with a good atmosphere and changing facilities.

The course was in good condition, the greens look good, but are a fraction slow for such a quality course. The back tees make the course a tough challenge, with some good carries to the fairway. The holes look tight, but aren't really (it's an optical illusion). There are good shaped holes which mean that position is key on certain holes. There are no bunkers, and the course doesn't need them. The practice facilities are excellent, the clubhouse is good and there was plenty of quality food.

A heathland course, with good golfing turf and greens that are back to their previous standard after a poorer period 2 to 3 years ago. No bunkers but that does not make it easy (SSS 72 v par of 71), longish carries to reach the fairway on a few holes and punishing rough can make it a bit intimidating for the higher handicapper but it is a great test and a course where you have to think your way round.
Previous winners of the Berkhamsted Trophy, a top amateur event held here each year, have included Sandy Lyle, Luke Donald, Gary Wolstenholme and Peter McEvoy.

Played with a member off the white blocks so the course measured over 6,500 yards. Always a tough challenge. The greens were recovering well from hollow tining after the Berkhamstead Trophy open comp.. Rough just starting to "juice up"! The green keepers are continuing to remove gorse and trees around the course, which has the effect of making it less of a challenge than it was when I first played here over 30 years ago. Make sure that you tuck your shirt in - I was admonished by the starter (who looked like a tramp) while in the practice nets. You also need to park in the right part of the car park on certain days (no signage and no barrier) as the club built the overflow without permission! Back 9 was slow as we caught 4 balls.

Superb course but damn it's tricky
Excellent challenge but there's trouble everywhere. No bunkers. no ponds, but loads of deep rough and gorse, and heather. A course to play more than once because the first time you'll have trouble.Very friendly staff, excellent starter. Great clubhouse. Good food.

No bunkers, plenty of danger though, keep it straight and accept the mounds and contours will throw it left or right at times.Avoid the gorse and bracken, tees fairways and fast contoured greens make it a real test of golf with the course in excellent condition.
One to play again now I know where I am going....

Beautiful and challenging
Discovered by accident but definitely one id play again. Despite the recent bad weather the fairways were in good condition and the greens were in fantastic condition.Reviewer Rating
