Play this course regularly. Normally in good condition. There had been no rain for several days. Then after a short shower the front 9 holes became a mess. Called mud on the fairways plus loads of leaf litter. Trolley wheels absolutely clogged. 9th hole, a par 3 is downhill to the green. The tee box has been moved several times of the last few years and the old tee boxes fenced off. The current tee box, which appears to be temporary despite having been there for 2 yrs has a 10 degree slope downhill. No attempt has been made to level it off. I feel the course should have been closed due to the general condition but it is a council course so maybe there is no onexto make that decision.

I've held off from reviewing my own course for several years, but its got into such a poor state I felt its best to just get on and write one.
Beautiful setting, drive up through an avenue of trees any private club would kill for. Its all downhill after that.
Putting green isn't maintained at all. Nets falling down. Tees are mostly fairly level, fairways are abysmal. Despite a wet and warm summer, we are still on preferred lies in August, and will surely be all year. Other courses did of course struggle with the dry spell last year, but I haven't seen one in the area that hasn't recovered well. That definitely includes all the other local public courses. Somehow, we have found it impossible to grow grass this year.
Yardage markers need cleaning up, flags aren't colour coded. Bins overflowing, rarely see a ranger. Random members of the public walking in all directions. No two bunkers have the same type or depth of sand. No first cut of rough. Almost the only positive thing I could say is that there is plenty of growth in the greens, but they are very slow and your game will have been spoiled long before you get to them anyway.
Overall, its the total lack of pride in what could be an outstanding facility that is what irritates. Because people playing it can see how little effort is put in, they don't feel the need to look after it either, so bunkers go unraked, buggies get driven across green surrounds and parked on tees etc. This was once voted the top public course in the country, so to now be ranked is 1900 out of 2100 (which is not harsh at all) is utterly shameful. Things have to change.

Bit of a let down

Greens and fairways very poor. Driving range(excuse me!) needs to upgraded. Pay attention on the back nine, you have to people, kids and dog watch as they are all over the course. Joe public and all
occupants of St.Albans seemed to wandering around at one time or another. I know it's a public right of way but it's a pain in the arse.

The greens are terrible, they have been worked on, does the greenkeeper actually know how to use the equipment? The fairways are patchy and the tees are uneven.

The course itself is quite pleasant and forgiving, but the conditions at the moment (mid April '16) are very poor. A few temporary greens, "normal" greens are soaked, with long grass and very slow/irregular. Lot of mud, especially in the rough area. Could be a decent course, but it's let down by no maintenance and poor drainage

Greens still very bumpy after hollow tining over 2 months ago, it should not take as long as it does for them to come good after this work, need a roller put over them. Most courses have hollow tining done but none take as long to come good afterwards.

Played on bank holiday cloudy, it didn't rain but greens were holding water in places
It was expensive (£26) for a council course and greens were not great. Not great value for money
Course was not very busy, able to get a quick round in with no slow play.

Crazy golf

From tee to green the course was in OK condition, but the greens were bare, concrete hard, and several had what appeared to be 'motorbike donuts? all over them. Once you got on the green (anything landed directly on the green would rocket off, no matter how much backspin you put on the ball) it was more like playing crazy golf.
