What the club says: Our challenging par 72 course was designed by James Braid and we are now well into our second century as a thriving members’ club situated in the heart of historic St Albans, known as Verulamium in Roman times.
We take great pride both in the year round condition of our course and also in the pace and subtlety of our greens, arguably the finest in Hertfordshire. You can always be assured of a challenging but fair test.

Not quite at its best yet
Plenty of work going on around the fairways & 6 holes with bunkers out of play. But it’s coming through winter nicely & greens starting to speed up nicely. Should be looking pretty unbeatable in the next 2 weeks.Reviewer Rating

Over priced..
A course that trades on the fact Samual Ryder was a member, but that's about a the best thing about it. To be fair the Greens were good, consistent and true and the fairways were decent but the course itself is a strange layout. Crossing fairways, crossing and playing over roads is a bit disconcerting. The members aren't very welcoming and are very ?up them selves? making it a little awkward at times. There are better courses to play in the area, so unless you have a burning desire to play here, go play one of the other better courses around St Albans/Harpenden.Reviewer Rating

Unfortunately the weather was very wet and it was quickly evident why it was carry only. There is also an amount of work being carried, including new bunkers. Would like to go back in the summer as I believe it will play very differently.Reviewer Rating

Interesting, tight course, good condition but a little noisy
An interesting but tricky course with a good variety of holes and nice elevation changes. Condition was good, excellent bunkers and greens. The putting surfaces were very quick and had a lot of contours to make you think. The first two holes are notable for the railway line rather than anything else but after that it got more interesting, the subtle dog legs are nice and out of bounds a risk on lots of holes which puts the pressure on tee shots and approach shots. Most holes are pretty tight as well, little margin for error and if you are off the fairway there is only a small amount of rough before bushes and trees. The 3rd hole had lovely views of Sopwell House and the 11th has a great view of St Albans Abbey in the distance. The 14th was my favourite hole, a attractive curve uphill to the left with the river Ver on the right. I also enjoyed the 17th, it may not be everyone's cup of tea but it's the only short par 3 on the course so it felt like a welcome relief to have an easier one.
The biggest negative for me was the noise from the A414 road. I thought the trains going past would be the bigger distraction but actually they are not too frequent and are only really noticeable from certain parts of the course. But the loud hum of road traffic is pretty constant, especially on holes 3 - 9, and I think this would put me off joining as a member even though it's the closest course to where I live.
There are good practice facilities although you have to cross the 11th fairway to get to the main practice ground and there was a little confusion as to whether or not non members were allowed to use this.
I would like to return again some day as a visitor, however, at £58 for a weekend round it's a little steep (I think in some ways you are paying for the historic Ryder cup connection), so will try to play mid-week next time.

Excellent!
We played the weekday 4-ball experience package - Range balls (grass area), Full English, Buggies/GPS Trolleys, green fee & 2-course lunch + 8pints/2Bottels of wine for ?87 each. Best value for money, the food was great, the course plays great and Richard is a fantastic host. All in all, the best pre-wedding day package I could've asked for.Reviewer Rating

My local course
Although I am a member elsewhere I have played here quite a few times with friends who are members. The greens are faster than they look and have plenty of undulations. On the first three holes the greens slope away from your approach so you need to land it short and run it on. The fourth tee is right behind the third green! The fourth fairway crosses the 9th. The fifth and sixth are dog legs so playing with a member is helpful. On the 16th tee you face a huge bank onto a concave fairway.17th is a pitching wedge over the road. 18th is a big par 5 especially into the wind. Not my favourite course but good to play other courses for a change, and the company is always first class.Reviewer Rating

Living on its Sam Ryder history
Played here approximately 10 times with member friends. Apart from the 14th by the cress beds and the massive 18th, not a special course. Two fairways cross!! and a pitching wedge par three over the public road. Well kept but not special. There are so many better courses in the area.Reviewer Rating

Don't Miss Out! Great course and club
Great club and nice course; many challenging holes, well kept tee boxes, fast greens with friendly members. It was Captain's Day yesterday and we were fortunate to meet many members and the captains, who were friendly and proud to tell us a bit of history of Samuel Ryder.Reviewer Rating

Proper Club
Haven't played here for a few years and is always a pleasure. The welcome from their Pro Team was great and the course in stunning condition considering the lack of rain. Greens were so pure, not rapid but with the slopes you face they don't need to be. A couple of beers after with it buzzy in the clubhouse with friendly members and food was really good. Won't leave it anywhere near as long to return, just wish I'd played better!

Historic and beautiful!
Played last week after a lot of rain and 'The Beast from the East'.We were amazed at how well the course was, pretty dry and the greens putted beautifully and were v quick for time of year. Apparently they have put drainage in on some greens and from our limited knowledge it certainly worked.
We did get held up on a couple of holes as they are installing a system to water bunkers, which we found hilarious as it won't be needed for a while!
Didn't eat but many were, good hospitality and beers in a friendly busy clubhouse.
Walking round seeing the paintings of Samuel Ryder, Abe Mitchell and James Braid was incredible. If you love golfing history or just a really good club then you must visit. We will return, hopefully when it stops raining!

Lovely course
Playing Verulam for the first time in December, I probably didn't see the course at its best. That said, despite the damp conditions, I loved playing here. The tees were in excellent condition, the greens were smooth and quick, and the fairways were well worth finding. The course unusually only has three par 3's and three par 5's, and while there are lots of trees to been seen, mostly the fairways are pretty generous and allow you to go with the driver from the tee.
There were lots of lovely looking holes, my favourite was probably the scenic 14th where water comes into play down the right hand side from the tee, but the hole which sticks out is the 17th. The 17th is a short par 3 that gets played over a fairly busy back road. There's a net to stop you from hitting the cars, but still...
The clubhouse and the welcome, both there and in the pro shop, were excellent. I can also recommend the huge bowl of chips from the bar menu.

Incredibly good!
Wow, played in a society day and from start to finish everything was terrific! The welcome from the Pro was great, who showed us into the clubhouse for our breakfast, whilst the lady in the office looked after the admin for us.
Course was incredibly dry considering a lot of rain and the greens were about as good as you can get. So quick and true they were a delight to putt on. The rest of the course is also so well looked after. The only strange thing is crossing the road but I suppose when the course was built it didn't matter with the lack of cars!!
Changing rooms great, with complementary towels waiting for you.
Then our dinner was stunning, presentation and taste. We had pork belly followed by eaton mess & cheese & biscuits. Oh & they sell Doombar!
This a place you must play and we will certainly be returning!!
