The Steel City. An interesting fact that may surprise you, the last two Englishmen to win a major, Matt Fitzpatrick and Danny Willett, are both Sheffield born and bred. Here are some of the courses that forged the two major champions.

Beauchief Golf Club

  • Golfshake Rating - 3.76
  • Green Fees - £21

In terms of value for money, Beauchief is a wonderful course. With a challenging par 3 over a pond and streams coming into play throughout - there is even an abbey in the middle of the course. Picturesque views of the Peak District are visible during your round, while the fairways and greens are well kept, and the clubhouse ensures a warm welcome.

Review Comment: "Course in good condition in spite of recent weather. Greens all in play and challenging."

Abbeydale Golf Course

  • Golfshake Rating - 4.70
  • Green Fees - £80

Recognised as one of the finest golf courses the city has to offer, Abbeydale is sure to offer a memorable golfing experience for all. Set within 111 acres of the Beauchief Estate, and hosting stunning views over Derbyshire from across the course, Abbeydale is a must play golf course if you are in the area.

Review Comment: "The course was in the most stunning condition and played beautifully. Always a pleasure to play here and the staff are always so kind and attentive."

Birley Wood Golf Course

Birley Wood Golf

  • Golfshake Rating - 3.60
  • Green Fees - £21

This idyllic, stress-free yet challenging course is ideal for players of all levels. Beginners and young players will enjoy the ups and downs of Birley Wood Golf Course that can enhance their overall game. Also worth mentioning this is the childhood club of Danny Willett! (And my local!)

Review Comment: "Nice course, reasonably priced and a decent amount of variety. I particularly enjoy holes 11 to 15."

Hallamshire Golf Club

  • Golfshake Rating - 4.29
  • Green Fees - £90

Former US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick’s home course. Located between the Peak District and the city centre, Hallamshire is a classic 18-hole heathland layout, with spectacular views throughout. A challenging test for golfers of all abilities and maintained in perfect condition. With top level drainage the course ensures it remains open to visitors and members all year round.

Review Comment: "This course was in great condition and didn't disappoint. It's one of the best courses in Sheffield. Layout and condition were both great."

Lees Hall Golf Club

  • Golfshake Rating - 3.92
  • Green Fees - £35

Highly regarded as one of the friendliest and most welcoming clubs in the region. The undulating parkland course hosts stunning views across the city. Lees Hall is kept in pristine condition year-round, offering a perfect challenge to golfers of all abilities.

Review Comment: "Really enjoyable, undulating and different course. Some really interesting and beautiful holes."

Lindrick Golf Club

Lindrick Golf Club

  • Golfshake Rating - 4.50
  • Green Fees - £135

Lindrick is often referred to as one of Britain’s finest inland golf courses. It provides an excellent challenge to all golfers, all year round. Fun fact, the 1957 Ryder Cup was held at Lindrick, where Great Britain and Ireland beat the USA.

Review Comment: "A great golf course in excellent condition. Greens fast and true, bunkers excellent, rough a fair penalty."

Rother Valley Golf Centre

  • Golfshake Rating - 3.76
  • Green Fees - £27

Rother Valley hosts a 26-bay floodlit driving, a nine-hole par-3 course and an 18-hole course. The 18-hole course brings a tricky test, with harsh hills and a few water hazards to keep you alert during your round - and in my case most of the time a reminder of why you should always take two balls to the tee box. The driving range has Toptracer technology to help you get the most out of your session, and the par-3 course offers a great challenge for beginners, as well as seasoned golfers looking to improve their short game.

Review Comment: "Considering the price, I think that Rother Valley is exceptional. The layout is challenging, the conditions on the course were good when I played. I've never cracked that excellent 7th. I'll do it one day."

Sitwell Golf Course

  • Golfshake Rating - 3.99
  • Green Fees - £40

Sitwell Golf Club is located amidst the scenic countryside on the outskirts of Sheffield and Rotherham. Originally designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie who later went on to assist the course design of the famous Augusta National. The course still holds loads of the original design, offering a peaceful yet challenging round.

Review Comment: "Fantastic condition with a fine variety of holes. Very helpful staff and excellent service. Already booked for next year."

Tankersley Park Golf Club

  • Golfshake Rating - 4.34
  • Green Fees - £35

Tankersley Park Golf Club is packed with rich history, with the land transforming from an oak forest to a civil war battlefield, a coal and ironstone mining area and even a battle-tank testing area, all before becoming the established golf course it is today. With guarantee of a warm welcome and a test of iron accuracy, Tankersley is a top golf course in the area.

Review Comment: "As always this course is a great challenge, with great greens. Fairways and rough are well maintained, and very friendly staff and members."

Founded way back in 1892, Hallowes is a pleasant parkland course. With gentle rolling hills, it shows some stunning views over the South Yorkshire and Derbyshire countryside. Kept in top condition all year round and true greens bringing a real test of short game and approach shots.

An exceptional course at a very reasonable price, Tinsley has one of the cheapest green fees in the Sheffield area without compensating in quality. A very popular course, with a nice challenge and memorable holes. Tinsley also offers a large putting green, perfect for putting in the hard hours.
