Dustinator Tames the Monster

By: Golf Shake | Mon 09 Mar 2015

Post by Sports Writer Derek Clements

HE'S back! After a still-unexplained absence of six months from the professional game, Dustin Johnson came from five shots behind to win the WGC Cadillac championship at the Blue Monster at Doral.

Johnson shot a superb round of 69 to overtake JB Holmes and Bubba Watson. Afterwards he was delighted. "After everything that I have been through, this is probably the biggest win of my career," he said. "I played just great today and it feels so good to get a win next to my name so quickly." This was the fifth tournament of his comeback. He missed two cuts but also had a second and fourth place to his name, so this should come as  no surprise.

It had looked like Holmes had his name written on the trophy. The American began with a scarcely credible round of 62 and found himself four ahead after 18 holes. He followed it with a 73, cursing his luck after his approach to the first green caught the wrong side of the slope on the very first hole and finished in the water. But he was still in front.

He made a shaky start to the third round but calmed his nerves with a hole in one at the fourth and by the time he had signed his card at the end of the day for a 70 he was 11 under par and five in front of Johnson (who also aced the fourth in round three) and Watson.

So, a straightforward stroll to victory. Right? Not exactly. Watson birdied the first. Already the lead was cut by one. In case you hadn't noticed, Watson, Johnson and Holmes are three of the biggest hitters on the planet.

The PGA Tour don't like golfers reducing their toughest golf courses to 62 blows, so the flags were tucked away in some pretty interesting places for the final round. And with the temperature down and the wind blowing, nobody was going to tame the Monster.

Watson, who says he hates this course, birdied the third. Three behind. Holmes bogeyed the third. Two ahead. Watson birdied the fourth. One behind. And all of a sudden, it was game on. Johnson should have birdied the first three holes but finally got going when he nearly holed in one again at the fourth. Holmes was 10 under, Watson nine under, Johnson seven under. And when Holmes dropped another at the fifth, he was tied with Watson. You could feel JB's pain.

And there was worse to come. A Holmes' bogey at the sixth left Watson in the lead. The left-hander couldn't keep it up, however, and would eventually finish third.

Johnson continued to play quite beautifully and holed some superb putts and as Holmes dropped another shot on the 14th, the tournament was Johnson's to lose. Holmes had to wait until the 16th for his first birdie of the day. It took him to eight under par, one behind Johnson. Both players parred the 17th and when Holmes narrowly failed to hole a long, tricky putt on the final green, Johnson was left with two putts to win.

The Dustinator is back, and you can be absolutely certain of one thing - it will not be his last win of 2015.
