Moseley Golf Club, Birmingham, founded in 1892, hosted its Scratch Open, The Hobbis Trophy on Saturday 13th September. Moseley member and 2006 Worcestershire Amateur County Champion Paul Garey took the title with a 140 level par total in the 36-hole event.

Garey held off fellow Moseley member and 2011 Midland Closed Champion, Richard Sadler; Chris Heeley, a 5-time Moseley Club Champion; and two-time Worcestershire Amateur Champion Josh Carpenter from Cleobury Mortimer in his final event before turning professional into 2nd place after all three players finished on 3 over-par, 143. Sam Hufton a former National Junior Champion from Copt Heath finished in 5th.

“I’m over the moon. To win a trophy named after Roy is truly an honour, whilst the Club itself proved once again to be one of the best in the Midlands with such a great field. To come out on top is fantastic; I’m delighted and look forward to defending the title next year.”

Garey, who has been a constant fixture in the County First Team for the past two decades, produced two rounds of level par 70 around a challenging course, reflected by a CSS of 72.

The course was presented in typically immaculate condition; much like it was earlier in the year for the EGU County Team Championships won by Warwickshire and individually by European Amateur Champion, Ashley Chesters.

The tournament is named after Roy Hobbis, a stalwart of golf in the Midlands and a Moseley member since 1980. Hobbis has a playing record that will likely never be beaten having represented Worcestershire in seven consecutive decades, as well as being appointed County President in 2000. He is one in a long-line of notable Moseley members.

The clubs boasts no fewer than ten international players in its 122 year history, including 2006 R&A Captain and 1963 British Amateur Champion Michael Lunt and more recently 1996 British Amateur runner-up Mike Reynard.

With a desire to honour Roy’s achievements in the game and create a Scratch Open reflecting its proud playing history, the inaugural Hobbis Trophy was staged in 2011.

In total 52 of the best golfers in the Midlands convened at Moseley this year, with no fewer than six current and/or past County Champions in the field. Envira, the waste management company owned by past-club captain and current one-handicapper Craig Pates, sponsored the event. The club wishes to thank the Pates Family and all the organisers for their continued support.
