Best European Hopes at The US Open 2025

The US Open is rapidly dawning upon us, and the stage is set for the third major of the season. Unless you’ve been living under a rock then you’ll have seen that Oakmont has undergone some major surgery to fine tune itself for this year's US Open.

Sure to present a stern challenge, the rough is thicker than ever and let's not even begin to talk about some of the distances from the tees. No doubt it’s going to be a tricky weekend for everyone involved, but which Europeans should you be keeping a close eye on?

As we all know it is a Ryder Cup year, and these major competitions set a huge stage for players to solidify themselves in the Ryder Cup team. So, let's take a look at some of the Europeans who could be eying up this year's US Open.

Rory McIlroy

No surprises straightaway. Two months on people are still talking about Rory’s iconic victory at Augusta. He will no doubt be fighting for Team Europe this September and he will also be a likely contender for the upcoming US Open.

Ludvig Aberg

During Aberg's full debut season on the PGA Tour last year, he put up a great fight in the Masters, which saw him finish second. He would then lead the US Open after two rounds before finishing fifth. With his first tour victory in America coming earlier this season at the Genesis Invitational, there is no doubt that Aberg's maiden major victory is close. Could this year's US Open be the one?

Tyrrell Hatton

The first LIV golfer on the list. We all know just how imperative these majors can be for the LIV players and following a disappointing T60 finish in the PGA Championship, Hatton will be looking to bite back. Currently sitting fifth in the European standings, the Englishman needs to claim a strong finish to keep himself in the top six.

Thomas Detry

Maybe not one who will be a standout to win it, but one you should keep your eye on. Following a win at the Phoenix Open early on this season, Detry has definitely struggled to hold up his form. Having missed the cut at the Masters and the PGA Championship, Detry will know that the remaining two majors will be vital if he wants to be playing in New York this September.

Tommy Fleetwood

Where does one begin with Tommy Fleetwood. To say, "it’s coming" would be an understatement. Fleetwood has already got four top 10 finishes so far this season, yet that first PGA Tour victory continues illuding him. Similarly to Hatton, Fleetwood currently sits around the area of no guarantees when it comes to this year's Ryder Cup team. Claiming his first victory on American soil in the form of a major would be a huge step forward for the Englishman if he wants to make it to New York this September.

Sepp Straka

The Austrian has had an interesting season so far that’s for sure. However, he is not shy of a trophy, that is for certain. Following his recent victory at the Truist Championship, Straka has now claimed two wins so far this season. Could he make it three at the US Open?

Viktor Hovland

Hovland was having a rough season early on, with missed cuts aplenty. However, a very surprising victory at the Valspar Championship showed huge signs of hope that Hovland could be in contention for a spot in this year's Ryder Cup team. Hovland followed the Valspar Championship by admitting he was still unhappy with many areas of his game, however, could he find his game in time for the third major of the season?

Matt Fitzpatrick

This could definitely be a controversial one for many. Matt Fitzpatrick won the US Open in 2022, claiming his first major title. A follow up victory at the RBC Heritage in 2023 would secure the Yorkshireman his spot in the previous Ryder Cup team, but it's been a rough journey from there. However, after competing with the leaders for most of the PGA Championship, it appears Fitz could have found a return form. Could this carry onto the US Open?

Jon Rahm

Jon Rahm

I often hear people say things like "it wouldn't be a Ryder Cup without a Spaniard involved," and I have to agree with these people. Jon Rahm has shown some class in both majors so far this season, with a T14 finish at Augusta and a T8 finish at the PGA Championship. A victory at the US Open would do wonderful things for Rahm’s chances of playing in this year's Ryder Cup.

There is our list of the top Europeans to look out for at this year's US Open. Do you think any of these names will be leaving Oakmont with the trophy? Or will they be leaving with their hopes of playing in the Ryder Cup shattered?
