Oakmont is arguably the ultimate US Open test - meaning that this year's championship has all the potential to be a classic. Most eyes will be on the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau, but anything can happen in this event.

Golfshake's Derek Clements picks out his picks to win - including a couple of outside bets.

Scottie Scheffler

Starting to look unbeatable. Has already won the US PGA and claimed three wins in his past four starts. Scariest thing is his ability to win while not at his best.

Rory McIlroy

The Masters champion simply has to drive it well if he is to have any chance of bettering his runner-up finishes of 2023 and 2024. Will Oakmont suit him?

The Swede has a fabulous temperament and has a wonderful record on tough courses - and they do not come much harder than Oakmont at a US Open.

Bryson DeChambeau

Will light up Oakmont in defence of his US Open crown. You can be sure of one thing - the American will be holding nothing back and will take some chances.

Robert MacIntyre

Could surprise a few people this week. His season to date has been steady rather than spectacular but the Scot has proved that he belongs at this level.

Xander Schauffele

Double major champion in 2024 but suffered injury earlier this season and has struggled to find his best form. But you can never write him off.

Tommy Fleetwood

Still looking for his first win on American soil. Could well be classed as the best current player not to have won a major. Has the game but must putt better if he is to win.

Shane Lowry

The former Open champion is enjoying a stellar season that has featured everything other than a victory. He is a big-time player who loves tough tests.

Andrew Novak

It has taken him a while to get there but Novak is currently enjoying a wonderful season and could well be the dark horse to keep an eye on this week.

Tyrrell Hatton

That he has the game is beyond question. With Hatton, it all comes down to how he handles the bad breaks that are certain to come his way.
