Which Golf Courses Are Hosting The US Open in The Future
The USGA has taken a somewhat interesting approach to the future hosts of the US Open, by revealing all the venues for every year (with the exception of a few) up until 2051! It seems they have also taken an intriguing approach by sticking to a select number of courses and recycling through them.
With that comes plenty of time to get researching and time to get ready for each iconic US Open venue that is coming our way.
Oakmont Country Club
Beginning with none other than this year's US Open host, which was selected for the milestone 125th US Open due to its staging a record number of US Opens. This year will see Oakmont host the US Open for a record 10th time. Oakmont is well known as one of the most challenging championship courses out there.

The distances at Oakmont are also set to take a big factor into play this year, with many of the par 3s spanning well over 200 yards. The players will be able to get there in one, no doubt, but who will have the best distance control to get their ball stopped on the green?
Oakmont last featured as a US Open venue in 2016, where Dustin Johnson would claim the title. Angel Cabrera also notoriously won the US Open here in 2007, with a winning score of five over.
Oakmont will also play host to the US Open in 2033, 2042 and 2049.
Shinnecock Hills Golf Club
Shinnecock Hills will host the US Open in 2026, as well as 2036. Shinnecock was last host to the US Open in 2018, where Brooks Koepka won with a score of one over par.
This historic venue is also known as one of the most scenic courses on this list, with picturesque views all over Peconic Bay. Shinnecock hosted the US Open and US Amateur way back in 1896. The iconic layout has since undergone two renovations in 1937 and 2013 to further enhance the course.
Pebble Beach Golf Links
Few courses across the globe can claim to level the iconicness of Pebble Beach. Its well-known signature 7th hole will come into play for competitors in the US Open in 2027, 2032, 2037 and 2044.
Pebble Beach has previously hosted six US Opens and a PGA Championship. It also plays annual host to the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The last time the US Open was played at Pebble Beach was in 2019, where Gary Woodland would claim the victory. Tiger Woods also found US Open victory at Pebble Beach in 2000, winning by an audacious 15 strokes. The legend that is Jack Nicklaus is another name that has a US Open victory at Pebble Beach, winning by three strokes in 1972 and finishing three over. The US Women's Open will also return to Pebble Beach in 2035.
Winged Foot Golf Club
Winged Foot’s West Course has held the US Open six times already, as well as hosting the PGA Championship once. The US Open will return to Winged Foot in 2028. Winged Foot was the host for one of the most talked about victories of recent years, Bryson DeChambeau's win in 2020, where he won by a six-stroke margin.
In 1974 there was the "Massacre at Winged Foot" where Hale Irwin's score of seven over was enough to win the title. Many believed that the course had been set up intentionally difficult and treacherous due to Johnny Miller’s record-breaking score of 63 the year before. 2028 is one I will be definitely be looking forward to in the coming years.
Pinehurst No. 2
Pinehurst has already hosted 11 USGA Championship events, and in 2029 it will gain another. Pinehurst has been long associated with the USGA since the 1960s and it is one of the most well-known golf resorts in the world. The US Open will return to Pinehurst in 2029, 2035, 2041 and 2047.
Just last year Bryson DeChambeau claimed his second US Open title at Pinehurst, as Rory McIlroy crumbled in the dying stages of an event that was his for the taking. DeChambeau wouldn’t be so forgiving, as he held his nerve to secure the win. Martin Kaymer also claimed a US Open title back in 2014 on Pinehurst soil.
Pinehurst No. 2 is renowned for its difficult green complexes, where many sit on a crown, leaving balls left short to roll back down for another try. The course also hasn't featured any rough since its renovation in 2010, where all the fairways were shaped, and the rough was replaced by a much more testing hardpan sand and native scrub.
Merion Golf Club
The US Open will return to Merion for 2030, where the championship will be celebrating the 100-year anniversary of Bobby Jones winning the US Amateur to complete the grand slam. Merion last hosted the US Open just over 10 years ago now, where Justin Rose claimed his first major victory.
In terms of history, Merion has tonnes of it. As previously mentioned, there is Bobby Jones’ grand slam victory there. In 1950 Ben Hogan defied all the odds. Just 18-months after a near fatal collision with a bus, Hogan forced the competition to a playoff with a fantastic shot with a one-iron. There is now a plaque on the 18th fairway to commemorate Hogan's legendary shot and victory. The iconic one-iron now sits in the USGA museum as well.
The US Open will also return to Merion Golf Club for 2040 and 2050.
Riviera Country Club
The US Open will return to Riviera for the first time since Ben Hogan won there in 1948. Riviera has so far only been allocated the 2031 US Open; however, it could be given more in the future. Another interesting fact is that the Riviera has been chosen to host the golf for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
The Genesis Invitational (formerly the Los Angeles Open) has been played at Riviera 60 times, with the most recent one in 2024 being won by Hideki Matsuyama. The 2031 US Open will be the course's fourth men's major, alongside the 1955 and 1983 PGA Championships. The US Women's Open is being staged there in 2026.
Oakland Hills
The US Open will make its way to Oakland Hills in Michigan for the first time since 1951. Oakland Hills will play host to the championship in 2034, as well as 2051. Oakland Hills is no stranger to the major events on the tour, having previously hosted the US Open six times and the PGA Championship three times. The course also famously held the 2004 Ryder Cup, where the European team won by the largest margin ever for either team. In very recent years the course has undergone some major renovations and changes, aiming to make the course formidable for potential major champions.
The Country Club
In 2038 the US Open will return to The Country Club at Brookline for the first time since 2022, whilst also celebrating the 125-year anniversary of amateur Francis Ouimet defeating Harry Vardon and Ted Ray. This historic upset was so huge, in 2005 it was portrayed a film depicting what happened that fateful weekend.
In 2022 Matt Fitzpatrick hoisted the US Open here. In doing this the Sheffield-man joined Jack Nicklaus in being the only two golfers to win the US Amateur and the US Open at the same venue. Fitzpatrick's final round was very memorable, as he held off Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris to claim the victory.
A historical venue for sure, the 2038 US Open is destined to be a good one.
Los Angeles Country Club
The US Open is set to return to Los Angeles Country Club in 2039. This course first hosted the major event just recently in 2023, where Wyndham Clark won by a margin of one stroke over Rory McIlroy. The course has also played host to the Los Angeles Open (now Genesis Invitational) several times. However, it hasn't returned since 1940.
In 2010 the course underwent some major renovations before expressing its interest in hosting the 2017 Walker Cup. Following the success of this, the course landed its first major in the 2023 US Open.
So, there is a brief run down over the courses we can expect to see hosting the US Open over the next few decades. However, there is still a small number of years which are yet to be determined. These are 2043, 2045, 2046 and 2048. So, we can also look forward to the announcements of these years, although it may still be a while away just yet. Which of these courses are you looking forward to seeing the most?
