Golf's Rising Stars - Matthias Schwab

By: | Thu 30 Mar 2023

Matthias Schwab derives from Austria and the 28-year-old collected another top 10 finish on the PGA Tour at the Corales Puntacana Championship.

Schwab is yet to win during his professional career, but a string of close calls demonstrates that his maiden scoop isn’t far away.

Player Profile

Before venturing into the professional ranks, Schwab enjoyed an illustrious amateur career, almost winning the ultimate title - the Amateur Championship.

In 2012, the Austrian progressed to the final of the Amateur Championship, but he lost narrowly to Alan Dunbar by one hole.

He studied at Vanderbilt University from 2013 to 2017, where he finished joint third in the individual competition for both the 2016 and 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship.

Schwab turned professional June 2017 and he spent the rest of the season on the Challenge Tour, eventually finishing 33rd in the Order of Merit.

Another campaign on the feeder tour looked destined before he became one of 33 players to earn a 2018 European Tour card via Q-School.

During his rookie season, he finished in T4 at the Hero Indian Open and culminated his maiden campaign in 72nd in the Race to Dubai ranking.

In 2019, Schwab experienced several close calls, but he finished the campaign still without that elusive professional victory.

A runner-up finish at the Porsche European Open was followed by a T4 result at the Italian Open.

His greatest chance of success took place during the 2019 Turkish Airlines Open, where he lost in a playoff to Tyrrell Hatton.

The golfer would conclude that year with yet another respectable result, this time finishing T4 at the WGC-HSBC Champions, an event that Rory McIlroy would win.

Schwab qualified for the Men’s individual event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, finishing T27.
