Two Golfers From One Yorkshire Club Get Set For The Open

By: Golfshake Editor | Wed 14 Jul 2021

156 players from across the world are competing in the 149th Open Championship, but one club that will find itself represented more than most is Howley Hall in Leeds.

This week, Marcus Armitage, who recently secured an emotional victory on the European Tour, is a member of the club, which is Highly Recommended on Golfshake. But the ever popular man affectionally known as 'The Bullet' won't be alone as Ben Hutchinson - one of the pros at Howley - made his way through Final Qualifying to claim his spot in the field at Royal St George's.

Marcus and Ben will fly the flag for Howley, just as Danny Denison (cousin of Ben) did at Hoylake in 2006.

Golfshake's Equipment Expert Ryan Rastall, who is the Head Pro at Howley Hall, commented: "It's really great that a small golf club in Yorkshire is able to say that it will have had three players go on to play in the Open."

Renowned as one of the game's characters, Marcus turned pro in 2008 and progressively worked his way through the ranks over 13 years and learned how to win on the way culminating in his first triumph on tour in Hamburg at the Porsche European Open.

Playing at Howley since he first picked up a club, Ben has represented Yorkshire and England at amateur level and turned pro in early 2020. His first year as a professional was disrupted by the global pandemic due to the lack of tournaments and no Q School. But he he has played on the EuroPro Tour this season with some good performances and won the qualifying at St Anne’s Old Links to book his ticket to Royal St George’s and compete in his first major.

Both are Callaway staff players and Ben will be seen wearing TravisMathew this week at the Open. Before he headed down to Kent, Ben spent time with Ryan, describing his preparations for the championship and showing us what's in his golf bag, which you can see in the video below!
