Do You Play More Golf Courses Than The Average Golfer

There is so much to love about golf, but perhaps the greatest aspect of this wonderful game is the plentiful number of courses that we all have the opportunity to play.

Unlike other sports with established pitch and court sizes, playing golf is a uniquely varied endeavour, as each layout you take on is distinctive and presents a range of challenges, a diversity of terrain, and aesthetics of the landscape that are particular to that one course.

This is what makes golf such a fascinating and engaging game - and it's clear that the overwhelming majority of you can't get enough of venturing out there to experience a wide spectrum of venues.

Have a think about how many golf courses you typically play during an average season. It's unlikely to match the total that acclaimed photographer Patrick Koenig achieved in a world-record-setting attempt in 2023 that saw him play an astonishing 580 courses throughout the United States in one year, with at least 70% of those having been walking rounds.

Now, there is no chance of you getting close to that, but what was striking from a recent Golfshake survey was discovering just how many golfers love to get out and visit a number of courses each season.

Let's see how you compare to the average golfer.

How Many Different Golf Courses Do You Usually Play Each Year?

That was the question we posed to the Golfshake Community and these were the results.

  • 2% of Golfers Just Play Their Home Club
  • 23% of Golfers Play 2 - 4 Different Golf Courses Each Year
  • 29% of Golfers Play 5 - 8 Different Golf Courses Each Year
  • 46% of Golfers Play More Than 8 Golf Courses Each Year

98% of golfers usually play more than one course per year, while almost half of them play over eight. Looking at previous surveys, these numbers are fairly consistent, underlining the enthusiasm of keen golfers to travel around and play a variety of courses.

From an earlier survey this year, we can expect to see even more passion from those who love this game. 61% of non-club golfers stated to us that they planned to play more courses in 2025, with 49% of club members reporting this too. Additionally, 9% of club members said they hoped to play more golf in 2025 compared to last year, while non-club golfers surpassed that number with 53% planning to play more than in 2024.

Golfers want to play more frequently than they ever have - and visiting an increasing number of courses is part of that journey.

It's what makes golf special among all sports and it's clear the majority of you are embracing the opportunity to widen your golfing education and discover an expansive variety of layouts.
