Lovely course with friendly atmosphere
Played club match in sweltering heat so the iced water in the spike bar by 10th tee was very welcome. No long off tee of the day but still a challenge. courses of this price are not going to have sprinklers on fairways so expect hard fairways and balls running out. Rough wasn't too penal and Greens were in excellent condition running true but not too fast.
15th is a lovely hole with water in front of green.

Enjoyable Chalkland course
Test Valley is a very good winter course, being laid out of quick drying chalkland. Playing in Jan with a Society, although the weather was drizzly and "orrid", the welcome from all, especially Maria and all in the Pro shop was first class, the only downside was that many in the group felt the catering prices were expensive (eg:Bacon Roll & Coffee £6.20) - the Roll was enjoyable but the coffee was from a machine and just about average, but all in all, that and the breakfasts were much too expensive. The course was in good condition and very playable but it does have a current problem with Fusarium on the greens, but to their credit (and unlike many other courses), we were told all about this before play. Although noticeable on some of the greens, it caused no problem for putting, the greens being all in all good condition and speed. The course is a good mix of holes and all in all is quite an easy walk with a few slopes but no "cardiac" jobs! The challenge starts right from the first with a dog leg left around the OOB practise area, and where a good and long tee shot is needed to get round the corner for a sight of the green. Although downhill to the green for the approach, be very happy with a par here. In fact, the same can be said for the next 3 holes as well, especially the stroke 2 4th, 437 yards, slightly uphill all the way, and with a large bunker seemingly fronting the entire green. A couple of fairly straightforward holes then bring us to the 7th, a short Par 4 of 283 yards. If you look at the card and notice that it is just 283 yards off yellows, but has a Stroke index of 5, then, you need to start wondering why for such a short Par 4. Hedge and OOB Right, narrow fairway, loads of bunkers, well, get a par and be happy! Eight is a sharp dogleft left where care is need all the way and safety is advised. Other than the quite plain par 3 9th, the holes around the turn are fairly straightforward and its not until the 15th that there is another memorable hole, a blind drive par 4 to a green well protected by a pond. 17th is a good & long Par 4 with the 2nd an uphill ( and long!) shot to a green, whilst the welcoming glow of the clubhouse is behind the 18th green - beware the deep deep bunkers on the left of this one.
Fine "winter meal" of Sausage & Mash after - good enjoyable day all round - but be careful of those catering prices!
