The worst conditions I have ever played in. Course was closed at 1pm. £120 it cost us. We should never have been allowed to tee off

Balgove 9 holes

Nice simple course fine for a relaxing afternoon. Quite expensive at £15 but it's not usually very busy and you can get great food at the Eden clubhouse.

Castle Course St Andrews

Great views, great condition, nice friendly staff, great course lay out, great facilitys. The only thing that spoils this course is the rediculas over undulating greens, the tenth hole is quite an easy 4 putt. There are some greens you can hit a good shot into then the ball runs away from the hole.

The Home of Golf

I suspect most golfers would like to play the Old Course at St Andrew at least once in their lives. We got a tee time after three attempts in the Ballot, and were really lucky with the weather - a few light showers, but hardly any wind. You can't help but be impressed by the history of the course, and think about the famous names that have played before.

Whilst the course was in great condition, and the greens were in fantastic shape, the only real disappointment of the day were the caddies. It must be hard to have lots of experienced caddies on hand, given the number of people who play the course every day, but we were pretty disappointed with the experience and advice of our caddies. My caddie was ok, but with him being a 12 handicapper who rarely played, I didn't feel he was experienced enough to advise me. My girlfriend's caddie made the cardinal sin of not really asking how she played - as a result he was always asking her to go for greens in regulation, and not really asking how she preferred to play. His efforts pretty much ruined the back nine for her, and put a real downer on a day that should have been one of the highlights of her golfing life.

In summary - course good, overall experience not so good!

good course, bad greens

The positive: great views and faciliies, challenging course layout
The negative: I thing the greens are a joke, too many gimicky, roller coaster layouts where it's a total guess.
For me it lets the place down, I wouldn't go back as the greens ruin it

Greens in very good nick and quick considering the extended winter. Fairways generous enough until the rough and gorse grows back in but overall it's a fairly run of the mill links course for which you pay the St. Andrews links premium in the green fees.

I played this course in June 2003 and the conditions noted in the first review were what I faced. It was the single hardest round of golf I've ever had (next to Gleneagles when the conditions were brutally windy.

Will try my luck again in a few weeks if the weather is better and report back.

This is a brutal course, the toughest of the St Andrews complex, and if the wind really blows some holes are almost impossible to play! – you've been warned – good luck!
