Course in good condition, can imagine it would get muddy further into winter though. Greens good & nice mix of interesting holes.

BUT they didn't have our booking (despite me having a confirmation email) and we then endured the longest 2 ball round of my life - nearly 5 hours!

Desperately needs a Marshall to ensure players are aware of what's expected with pace of play and to get them back on track when out of postion. They have a Marshall hut on the 10th tee so why not use it?

Nice course with great scenery

Played Hollins Hall a few times now and have always enjoyed playing it when under the Marriott brand but was disappointed on this occasion. Hotel showing signs that the course is secondary to the accommodation, pro shop now gone instead it is a small amusement arcade with just a desk for the golf check in. Course showing signs of neglect, tee beds scruffy, fairways not mown, no definition. Greens were good but too quick for this type of course. Shame as it could be an excellent golf course with some great holes and lovely scenery, so come on Elite get it sorted.

First impressions - staff very friendly but coffee overpriced at £3.20 a cup and forget the sausage muffin - poor. buggy service to 1st tee was not running so serious climb required. Course is a good layout, greens hard, fast with more than enough slope (made me look daft on more than one occasion). Beautiful vistas. It is exposed and and is seriously hilly so if you struggle with that either get a buggy (expensive) or play elsewhere. Its a mixture of golf and mountaineering. I'm not rushing back.

Visited hollins hall on the 5th of October and the course was ok with a few quirky holes especially the stroke index 1 hole the 9th which was a bit of a Mickey Mouse hole luckily for us we asked an old fella walking his dog to tell us where the hell we were supposed to hit to, I hit it exactly where the old guy told me to hit it and it was in the middle of the fairway however my mate hit his tee shot roughly 5 yards right of mine and the same distance and his ball is still missing in action! That leads onto the the signature hole number 14, unless you hit the ball 329 yards from an elevated tee onto the green, just keep walking you've got to hit to the narrowest fairway in Christendom with a stream running across the fairway and a large pond further on to the right also forgot to mention the 50 foot trees to the left with rough all the way down the left hand side, unless your a single figure handicap you will be hitting a iron to the fairway hahaha if you hit it and then another iron to the green. On the plus point the greens were running fast and true!!!

Hilly in places. You get the impression that they wanted to make a championship course, but realised they had not achieved it. So, they made the fairways very narrow and the rough very deep to protect the course. A couple of nice holes, but the rest are nothing special.

The course has the potential to be realy nice but with it being on top of a hill the weather is never calm ive played this a few times and its been the same every time. The staff are generally ok with one lad whos great he takes you up to the first tee and bless him he brought me a bacon sandwich on the 7th. Unfortunatly that was the best of my day

Course not really ready

Tee boxes and greens not in good condition yet, fairways a bit thin and claggy. Probavbly rate a lot better when there has been a period of fine weather. Some good holes especially on the back 9 which is superior to the front 9

Hollins Hills

Renamed Hollins Hills, First time here, but was warned it was quite hilly. lol. the lift to the first tee was much appreciated. The fairways were very dry due to the lack of rain and we found the greens to be a little bobbly. but despite this, we enjoyed the challenge in very warm conditions. I Know next time to hire a buggy tho.

Hilly and challenging, slow play!

Played on spec on a Sunday afternoon. The standard pay and play rate was good, the £5 resident rate reduction to £17.50 made it extremely good value. Not overly long but long enough. However, length isn't this course's defence, it is its undulating, often hilly, layout with the majority of greens raised up with significant drop-offs, and the fact that much of the course is exposed to the moorland winds. The back 9 is the more interesting of the two, but both 9s have some short and medium par 4s that need plotting and one or two genuinely good-looking holes.. Not a lot of need for driver but that's no bad thing given that miss the fairway on several holes and the deep stuff kicks in very quickly. Standing out for me were the greens. All undulating and very well kept, I didn't find a straight put all the way round. Only two gripes, one major one minor. The minor gripe was the state of the tees; not that they were awful but they weren't great, and that stood out given the excellent state of the rest of the course. My major gripe was the fantastically steep, long slog up to the 1st tee. It was a good job the tee wasn't busy, as I had to take a few minutes to get my breath back at the top. For me, that steep slog was bordering on unacceptable. Would play there again, but unless you're fit it strikes me you are almost forced to shell out for a buggy.

Tough & Challenging

We were lucky enough to have a free four ball and travelled from Newcastle. The hike to the first tee box is the toughest uphill stretch but following that you are met with a tough 18 hole layout. The wind was strong on the day we played and it made scoring tough. The mown grass next to the fairways also an interesting and at times tough place to be. That said it was well maintained, undulating greens and a solid place to play golf. The highlight the unique hole playing to the viaduct - very good and even made a par.

Challenging, enjoyablecourse but slow play and poor practice nets let

Don't be put off by first impressions at the practice facilities. The nets are atrocious !!!
The course is a challenging, both physically and mentally. The fairways and greens are in very good condition. The greens are especially challenging, with all sorts of ridges, inclines and idiosyncrasies. I preferred the back 9 as the holes were more interesting with more features. Sat was very windy so it added another dimension.
Slow play - I played as a 2 ball on Sat and Sun and was waiting on every tee due to sheer number of players in the course. There were 6 four-balls infront on Sunday so the round took almost 5 hours. I played on a sunny day but it would have been a miserable experience on a wet day.
Clubhouse is part of the 4* hotel, so expect the prices to be higher in the bar/ restaurant.
Pro shop staff were chatty and friendly.

Played the course in severe wind and rain a and although the course took everything in its stride, the majority of our group walked off after 7! My foursome continued through to 16, then cut over to 18 but the weather had taken its toll on us. Following day, despite all the bad weather previously, the course was in good condition although putting was a lottery as they'd been spiked to pRotect against water logging. Some bunkers still had a hard grounding underneath about an inch of softer sand. All in all though, enjoyed the course but would definitely wait for warmer, drier weather before attempting again.
