The weather was cloudy, cool with a light wind which got stronger the longer we played.
First impressions were not good!
We paid for our golf and got a bucket of range balls.
The range wasn't a range! It was a piece of waste land with one mat.
The range balls were a mixture of proper golf balls and range balls.
Then I went into the small clubhouse to get the regulation bacon butty! Only to find out that they don't start cooking until 11am.
We arrived on the first tee and found that we were looking down a bowling alley. They have built a bank on each side of the fairway and it does look like a bowling alley!
The tees were OK, the fairways were OK. The greens were green, they had grass on them and were well cut, but they were rock hard! Even with a bit of moisture on top they would not hold a golf ball, you had to drop it short and let the ball run onto the green.
You could tell that this used to be a nine hole course as the two halves are totally different to each other. The front nine are nice mature holes but the back nine is like one big field with a few trees in between the fairways.
I did like the 6th hole (Par 4 - 281 yards - SI 7), you tee off uphill to a marker post. It's only a short par 4 but you don't realise that just over the brow of the hill is a pond! It's on the left hand side of the fairway, but the fairway narrows the nearer the green you get!
My favourite hole was the 17th (Par 4 - 322 yards - SI 6), you stood on the tee and one each side of the fairway, about 150 yards away were two big trees. As you looked down the fairway you could see the green in the distance, nestled into a small wood! We then found out that there was a pond before the green that went from the front of the green around to the left hand side of the fairway. I hit a three wood and ended up about ten yards short of the pond on the right hand side of the fairway, if I had gone left I would have been in the pond!
They had a small bar which was nice enough.
I don't think I'll go back here this winter, but I might try and give it a go again next summer.

Good value but fairways narrow
A nice clubhouse, food, drink and shop ... excellent value for a midweek round of golf. The course was in a good condition, however we found the fairways very narrow and when off the fairway you found yourself in clover, which hide the ball very well, so plenty of lost balls in our group, despite OK tee shots.Reviewer Rating

hilly for essex
Interesting course particularly round holes 6, 7, 8 where the slopes are steep and the water in front of the green quite a challenge for the second shot.Reviewer Rating

Interesting terrain
This is a short course 5700 yards on the yellows but is arranged across interesting terrain. The first five holes are straight forward on level ground, then the sixth par five of 552 yards is over a hill to a closely guarded green in a valley with a row of trees and a pond. The seventh goes back up the hill on a dog leg right with green guarded with hedgerow and tree. The eighth is a short 313yard par 4 but with a big pond to clear right in front of the green. The 14th is a difficult par five dog leg left across a steep side slope where balls run to the bottom of the slope from a blind tee shot. The green is guarded with a stream in front. The 15th green has a pond in front. Then the closing 3 holes are straightforward on the level.
