Magical Formby

Formby is the gem on the Lancashire golf coast; a true escape from reality and the most unique yet challenging test of golf that the area has to offer. Holes 1-4 invite you into your round, running parallel to the train tracks like any true links should, with cleverly placed bunkers and heather set back against gigantic pine trees. Moving through to the 5th, a genius par 3, you begin to feel the strength of the course. Holes 6-10 are undoubtably the best stretch of 5 holes that I have ever played. Slowly increasing in their majesty, with the 9th (a 450 yard par 4 from a hugely elevated tee stretching out towards the Irish Sea) being one of the finest holes in the UK; if not the world! It’s hard to pick a favourite, but the 7th is absolutely stunning and can gift you a birdie or completely destroy your scorecard, there is no in-between. Holes 11-16 are true links, walled with sand dunes and peppered with deep riveted bunkers. The 12th hole is rated as one of the best on the course, but be sure to take a look at the view from the back tee on the 14th - it is breathtaking. 16 is a stunning, short and killer par 3, a must-have for any top course. Finally, shooting down the par-5 17th, you see the beauty of the clubhouse in the distance, lined with tall pine trees on the right hand side. 18 is a classy closing hole, with an incredible green that is a true test of any putter! Make sure you visit Formby (and Formby Ladies) but be sure to not get it confused with Formby Hall.

Heathland by the Sea

Such a great set up - if you're a member here you've done well! played 36 holes in the summer, which worked out at good value for money. The course winds itself around the outside of the property, with the ladies course in the middle, so you get all wind directions in 1 round, and there's a strong heathland vibe, despite it being classed as links. We played the yellow tees in the morning, then mixed it up with the reds in the afternoon. Despite being a few 100 yards shorter, it still remains a challenge due to excellent design and well placed bunkering. The clubhouse is also excellent, and offers a dormy option. Main regret is not playing the ladies course too, but that's just a good reason to revisit!

Outstanding course, one of the best courses I have ever played. Each hole was very challenging in it's own way although 6-14 were particularly tough

Truly Incredible

I have played this course many times and it is incredible. It is a challenge, it is fun and the views are fantastic. The holes are fun and hard at the same time. I would play this course over any of the 3 Open courses in the area any day. Depending on the wind coming off the sea, I have played the par-3 #10 with an 8-iron and with a 3-wood! So the course can be different every time you play it. You have to play this course-a true gem. The club house is splendid too, great staff and you can even stay in the dormy right in the clubhouse. The full package. I normally do not write reviews like this but this course deserves it. Thank you Formby Golf Club!

Stunning links golf course

Despite the rain I loved every hole on this gorgeous links course. Set with the backdrop of pine trees, each hole is interesting and challenging in its own right. The greens are some of the best I have ever played on. Club has top class practice facilities, good size changing rooms with showers and food in the bar was good value. The pro shop and starter offered a warm welcome especially being the week of The Open. Can't wait to go back one day!

Excellent Links Course

Excellent course in great condition. Plenty of dangers await from deep bunkers, heather, obscured fairways etc. Large challenging greens with undulations, but true roll of the ball. Would certainly help if different coloured flags for pin positions were used. Tough course but very interesting.

What a club, what a welcome, what staff..... from Julie on reception, to Tony at the bar to the extremely helpful waitresses and staff including the exceptionally courteous green staff.
This course was great fun and my first proper links course it was as hard as you may think..... deadly if you dont stay on fairways and the greens were a combination of difficult and fun in judt the right quantity

Highly recommend the dormy accommodation, breakfast and bar food!

This is what golf is supposed to be like everywhere

This course is beautiful and well-maintained. The views are lovely, the clubhouse is great, and there's a nice variety of holes. It's in superb condition overall. The fairways and greens are top quality, and the fairways drain well because they're on sand. It's a traditional course that's very well presented and challenging. I had a great time playing here.
