New Course at Walton Heath
The course is predominantly flat and at some places intertwines with the old course. It is a fair challenge for most categories of golfer. It is pretty essential to make sure you hit straight off the tee in that there is plenty of heather to catch the stray shot. Even If you can find your ball, it is then a difficult shot out. The fairways and greens were in very good condition and the greens were very consistent. The clubhouse is excellent and staff were as ever first class. An enjoyable round of golf if not always straightforward.Reviewer Rating

TCR
I have played dozens of top courses both in UK and Europe and after reading the great write ups about Effingham I was disappointed.I played there at the end of April and it was average. Big wide open spaces with nothing really memorable. Hidden gem my arse.
Grand clubhouse, nice staff and good food.
I would go back for breakfast, but that’s it. There are numerous golf course in the area within a similar price range which are better.

Disappointing
I was expecting a lot from effingham and had been meaning to play it for a while. Pretty much every hole had GUR which was disappointing for the price of the green fee. Fairways weren’t in great nick but it has rained for 2 weeks. Tough to get a smile from any of the staff. Lukewarm is the best word I can think of to describe the experience. Won’t go back. Not in the same class as burhill for exampleReviewer Rating

That's not to say that this isn't a lovely course, because it really is. The are some very pretty looking holes, especially on the back 9, and the views towards London are exceptional.
The fairways are generally pretty wide, which is good because when you leave the fairway there's some pretty mean rough. The greens were very smooth and ran fairly well, although as a group we felt that the speeds between greens were fairly inconsistent. Again, maybe that's us being a little picky given the cost.
Would I go back? I probably would, although I am certain there are better courses for the money.

in the winter after a night of heavy rain you can rock up and know the course will be open there will be no standing water and you wont even get your shoes muddy. In the summer it plays like a different course the rough is up (long and wispy , punishing ,but you can still find your ball)and the greens are firm and fast and very tricky to read. The views of London from the top of the course are amazing and after a great round of golf you can enjoy a pint in the magnificent old club house.

Hugely disappointed
I had been looking forward to playing Effingham since winning a 4-ball voucher in a charity auction earlier this year. Nothing was as I anticipated.Making the tee booking was not easy due to very limited times for visitors.
On arrival the staff were indifferent and we were unable to find an unlocked door for the clubhouse or locker rooms.
Worst of all was the state of the greens. Very patchy and unplayable.
I won't be returning and neither will my guests

Society Day at Effingham
Traditional members course. Harry Colt designed. Very heavily bunkered (84 bunkers?). Par 3 holes particularly difficult. Very good turf on fairways plus fast true greens. I found that driving was.easier - open fairways and rough not to tough. Played better than my handicap due to the high Slope. Excellent clubhouse food. Not a cheap venue but worth the money. Would happily play again, some local knowledge ideal (eg bunker positions and green slopes). Great views of distant London skylineReviewer Rating
