Montgomery - disapointing!

The name "Montgomery Course" is really a bit of a misnomer for eight of the first nine holes are from the old wentwood Hills course, the other of these being a fill in Par 3. Its not until the 10th that new holes are in evidence, and these being on the site of the old Codra Woods course.
The Montgomery as it stands now is the hilliest and most exhausting of the courses at Celtic Manor, and in truth, if you are not of a certain age and fitness, a buggy is a must have - its not just the hilly nature of the land, but in some cases, marathon walks twixt green and tee. The downside of this though is that unless you play Mid summer, you have to stay firmly attached to the buggy paths, and that at the end of the day means an extra long walk anyway, just getting from buggy to ball and all that. Played in the middle of a very wet winter, but thankfully on a nice day, the ground was very very wet indeed, and more than one ball was lost in the middle of a fairway, embedded somewhere in its own mark.
As for the design of the course, well 1,2 and 3 are the openers of the aforementioned Wentwood Hills course, with the 3rd being that very noted, very long steep downhill Par 5 with panoramic views of the 2010 layout down in the valley floor. After this, you turn back uphill on the last few holes of the original course. It must be said that other than the huge walks between holes, the holes themselves are attractive, all different and other than the damp underfoot, were all very playable. After the halfway hut and the new holes as, I presumed, the ones designed by Monty continued the theme of every hole being different and a number being blind and hard to know where you are going. I did in fact enjoy these later holes more than the front 9 as they seemed more in a continuous flow, and were a bit drier underfoot. Overall, course wise, challenging, and probably too tough for the longer handicapper, attractive holes, all different, but as a whole, exhausting, and if played in damp conditions, are pretty darned muddy in places.
The clubhouse is a typical American type, and is quite attractive, but mortgage is needed for any thing in the proshop, and the catering well, OK, when it comes - our group didn't even get served for 45 minutes after we sat down, and then same again for it to appear - good when it came, but sadly, very ineficient.
Would I go again, certainly not in Winter, and probably not in Summer either as it thence becomes pretty costly all in all. If I returned, well probably only to play the 2010 again, but not the Monty. And finally, a really piffing course marshall had great delight in trying to belittle us saying that we were 30 minutes down on the usual time, to which our reply was that if we didn,t have to spend half a day looking for balls in the middle of a saturated fairway, then we would be well on time - this efficacious person was very annoying and got put into his place by a couple of our group who were Club captains and one County official - truthfully, there is no need for people like that on any course, and is probably the main reason that Celtic Manor "Montgomery Course" is now a " been there and done it venue - many more better ones out there still to play.
