This is one of the most highly ranked courses within the SE quadrant of the M25 (according to reviews) and I was very keen to finally put that ranking to the test. I played on an overcast but mild Saturday afternoon during Ryder Cup weekend so the course was generally very quiet for my 1.30pm tee off.

After checking in I was (sensibly) rushed onto the easily accessible 2nd tee to avoid getting stuck behind a 3 and 4 ball just teeing off. There were pro's and cons to this. The obvious advantage was that I didn't get stuck behind 2 groups when playing alone, the other less obvious was that it avoided playing a disapointingly tame 1st hole which is a fairly featureless 150 yard Par 3.

The downside was that my leisurely round started in a rush and I then played a stinker on the 2nd!! Thankfully my game and the course picked up from there on in.

Overall this was a thoroughly enjoyable golfing experience and I don't use the term experience lightly. I can't confess to having played a large number of the Top 100 courses but few have stayed in the memory the way the Addington did. Its not overly long but with four 420 yard par 4's all playing slightly, two sweeping Par 5's and long par 3's uphill it uses its natural terrain and flora and fauna superbly to offer a course which is very easy on the eye but always testing and requring (in my case) every club in the bag.

The stand out holes are perhaps obvious being the the longer Par 3's (the 13th and 17th) which both just gave me a shiver down the spine just standing on the tee. Certainly it helped that I parred them both but this is not a biased view, just pay your green fee and take it all in. Other stand out holes were the 9th dog leg requiring two well juged shots over the heather filled ravine and then the 12th an outrageous Par 5 played over a sweeping hillside back down to a deep rave before an approach to a another excellent sloping green.

I could go on but suffice to say its one of the more memorables courses I've ever played, its very attractive, short but offers a good test of golf and in generally wet late summer conditions the greens were in excellent condition. The Clubhouse is a little old fashioned (and the entrance wasn't clear!) but overall it appeared to be a decent mix of old and modern on both the lounge and changing rooms.

The only real downside for me was that its a good 45 min drive through a congested part of South East London and with an annual membership fee of over £2000 p.a. I'll (sadly) never be a member.

However I did book my tee time through 'teetimes.co.uk' and paid £45 for a Saturday afternoon round which I think is very good VFM considering the ranking of the course.

(Though I'd be horrified at having to pay the full price of £100 which is enough to scare off most casual golfers)

Best course in South London

Played in a visitor 2 ball, super practice facilities. Pro shop very welcoming and provided great background to work and course projects. Course in fantastic condition and better than many courses in summer, unreal considering it was a frozen January late morning.

Greens some of the quickest I've played, fairways and tee boxes I great nick. Course challenging but fair with no overly penal rough. Stretch of holes 11-13 unreal and hard to pick a favourite. Good pace of play and let through by a member four ball early doors..

Could not recommend enough.

Hadn't played here for a couple of years. Doing a huge amount of work at present taking out several mature trees and clearing out areas underneath them so less lost balls etc. Reduced green fee as a result which was good. Didn't affect playability of the course though which was still in good condition. Still an excellent challenge and well worth playing if you get the chance. Nice half way hut too.

Fantastic course worth visiting

A lovely woodland course with some tough rough, gorse and heather.
Greens are very quick but very true and impressive.
Friendly clubhouse and service.
Highly recommend it.

Beautiful heathland course

Beautiful course, fine views of London, hard to believe you are so near the city. Every hole except the first is a gem. All different, all challenging in their different ways. Lots of carries over heather and mini ravines to fine but sloping greens where a 2 putt is a triumph.Only the clubhouse (closed at the moment because of covid) does not live up to the splendours of the course.

Every shot needs thought,

Over the winter a massive amount of work has been carried out and consequently the course has looked tired. If you played here in early spring you would have thought that it was a cleverly designed course but rundown. However a few weeks of good weather has transformed the course and it now looks and plays like the top course it is. It's not long but there are very few shots that do not require accuracy while the tee boxes, greens and approaches are stunning. If you have a good round (stay straight) you will think that the course is not too difficult but you will be punished for going off-line. Six Par 3's add to the challenge (ranging from 120 -225) of being accurate. The greens require a special mention as they are fast but true, enjoy,

Tired

She needs a bit of a refurb. Some lovely holes and some plain ones. The club house is looking quite tired. Not worth the 80 quid green fee.

Countryside in the heart of Croydon!

Played this course last week while visiting the in-laws in Beckenham. Was a bit surprised when my brother in law said he had booked one of the top courses in England in nearby Croydon but it was superb. It was a freezing but soft day so not much run on the fairways so some of the par 4s played very long but overall it is a shortish course with some beautiful holes. The course really kicks into gear from about the 5th hole onwards with shots across ravines with lovely wooden bridges to cross. My personal favourite was the par 5 12th. As pretty as some of the holes we played recently at Druids Glen. I would love to play again in the summer but a few shots would need to be 'down clubbed' as the extra run would rule out driver on a few holes. A bit pricey but then again it is England and it is golf so to be expected!

Beautiful and unique course

What a treat to play The Addington in October.

A golf course sculpted by nature with a great variety of holes, many of them memorable to play and to look at . A really unique lay out and in great condition when we played.

Got a green fee and breakfast for £50.

Greens were true and decent speed.

A treat to play here . Not the cheapest but certainly one of the very best courses around .

Hope to return ????

Great course, especially so close to London with some cracking views. Some lovely holes and enough of a challenge whilst offering a good chance to score.

Nice course but overpriced green fees

This is a very attractive course to play and testing too. Some beautiful holes once you get into the round. However, Clubhouse is dated and the green fees are overpriced. Also, the course struggles in places with drainage in the winter.

Lovely day, we were playing and having our lunch in our t-shirts, in February. For £50 for 2 rounds and lunch it's really good value for playing a lovely course. It's a testing course at times, so you need to be on form to score well. Greens were pretty fast and fairly true considering the wet and cold weather. Would love to play this course in the summer. The other thing I liked about playing here is that it wasn't busy. I think it took us about 3 hours for the 2nd 18.
