World Golf Awards Names Thracian Cliffs as Bulgaria's Best

By: Golf Shake | Tue 18 Nov 2014

Thracian Cliffs Golf & Beach Resort has been named Bulgaria’s ‘Best Golf Hotel’ for 2014 at the inaugural World Golf Awards, held at Quinta do Lago, Portugal.

The stunning Black Sea resort was in good company, with victorious European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, awarded the honour of ‘Golf Personality of the Year’, and the ‘Voice of Golf’, Peter Alliss, was recognised with a lifetime achievement award for services to the golf industry, at an event hosted by BAFTA-winning TV presenter Steve Rider.

Thracian Cliffs Golf & Beach Resort has gained many admirers since opening in 2011, with images of the sensational cliff-top Gary Player golf course being transmitted around the world. It also successfully hosted the 2013 Volvo World Match Play Championship and scooped the ‘European Golf Resort of the Year 2014’ award, bestowed by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO).

A spokesperson for Thracian Cliffs said: “It is a real honour for us to receive the award at the inaugural event and we will be looking to improve further on our performance in order to retain the title next year.”

World Golf Awards managing director Chris Frost said: “It has been an honour to welcome so many key players from the global golf hospitality industry here to Conrad Algarve for this inaugural gala ceremony. My congratulations go out to all out winners. This is recognition you so richly deserve.”

Situated on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, the resort is also a haven for non-golfers, offering a choice of two high-spec residential villages – many with panoramic sea views – gourmet restaurants, a bijou spa and its own beach club, all within the unique environment of the Cape Kaliakra coast, which, lying, as it does, further south than Florence, Monaco or Marseille, benefits from a desirable climate.

Indeed, Player himself said of Thracian Cliffs: “You will not find a golf course like this anywhere else on the planet. Pebble Beach is renowned as the best site and I would say Thracian Cliffs is twice as good as Pebble Beach.”

The beautiful cliff top course offers stunning sea views from every hole with the signature par-three sixth providing particularly incredible vistas as you look down to the green which is found surrounded by the lapping waves of the Black Sea. From the tips it measures almost 231 yards – a real test of golf and concentration.

And golfers looking to visit the best golf hotel in Bulgaria can take advantage of an early-bird offer for 2015 holidays, which us currently available: bookings made before December 20, 2014, will be 20 per cent cheaper thanks to the outstanding deal, with savings of up to €240 per week and three-night golf packages from €199.

In a separate promotion, the award-winning resort is also offering golfers the opportunity to play to their heart’s content on its spectacular Player-designed golf course – and the neighbouring Ian Woosnam-designed Lighthouse Golf & Spa Resort – with prices starting from €549 (around £459) per person for a five-night unlimited golf package in March 2015.

In addition to wall-to-wall golf, the package includes return transfers from Varna airport, a shared buggy for each round, and free use of the driving range at Thracian Cliffs, as well as access to the fitness area, hammam, steam bath and Jacuzzi at the resort’s spa.

The temperate climate at Thracian Cliffs Golf & Beach Resort is ideal for the regular special events which take place on the unspoiled Bendida Beach, located directly on the seafront of the resort. And, with a bottle of beer in Bulgaria costing around 68p* – the lowest of all holiday hot-spots in Europe – and a three-course evening meal for two, with wine, available for under £28*, the country is clearly one of the best-value destinations around in 2014, and is likely to remain so next year.
