Get to Know New DP World Tour Winner Ockie Strydom

By: | Mon 12 Dec 2022

SOUTH AFRICA'S Ockie Strydom carded a final-round 69 to claim a maiden title on the DP World Tour with a two-shot victory at the Alfred Dunhill Championship on Sunday.

Strydom started the final round level on 15-under par with Scott Jamieson but suffered a setback on the ninth when he ran up a double-bogey at Leopard Creek.

But he rallied, however, to secure four birdies in the next five holes and ease to victory on 18-under par, ahead of Spaniard Adrian Otaegui (68) and England's Laurie Canter (64). Jamieson faded with a final round of 76.

"My wife and parents are probably crying at home," Strydom said. Strydom said: "It feels good. I’ve finally done it. To do it on Leopard Creek as well is something special.

"It's nice. I think my plans just changed a little bit!

"Everyone here, thank you. My host that had me this week, unbelievable, all credit to him; my wife, probably crying at home; my parents crying at home; my caddie - thanks a lot.

"It's my favourite place, this. The course is looking phenomenal - the best I've ever seen it.

"It's the bush. I'm calm in the bush. My first win was in the bush and now we're back in the bush. I'm just so happy."

Player Profile

Strydom was born in Kempton Park, South Africa on January 8, 1985 and turned professional in 2009 and his victory at the Alfred Dunhill Championship was his first on the DP World Tour. He also won a minor event on the Sunshine Tour in 2019 and has finished second on 19 occasions.

Strydom averages 316.1 yards, hits 63.9% of fairways and 71.6% of greens in regulation. He averages 29.3 putts per round.

He began the week in 385th place in the world rankings. He has played in a total of 39 DP World Tour events. Apart from his victory he has managed just two top-10 finishes. Winning the Alfred Dunhill Championship means he has gained a card to play on the DP World Tour in 2023.
