Local Wolverhampton Youngsters Have Chance to Represent City

By: Golfshake Editor | Wed 06 Jun 2018

The 3 Hammers Golf Complex has been working closely with local youth organisations, charities and schools across the Wolverhampton area, to provide young people (who have never played golf) a chance to represent their city.

Team Wolves will take on novice youngster from across the UK when the country’s leading golf charity’s national Street Golf Final takes place at 3 Hammers later this month. The first round of qualifying events took place at the Wolverhampton Dome. 50 children from the Wolverhampton Community Trust took part in the event. Youngsters were pitching over Wolves FC banners, chipping into buckets and even attempting tricky 10 foot putts.

“Running this sort of event is really satisfying,” comments Rob Bluck, Director of Golf Coaching at 3 Hammers Golf Complex. “None of the youngsters here have ever tried golf, so to have so many willing to try something new has been fantastic. There are some really talented natural golfers here who will be invited to 3 Hammers to take part in the final selection process for Team Wolves alongside youngsters from The Way, Wolverhampton Youth Zone.”

3 Hammers has a great reputation for bringing youngsters into golf. Thousands of girls and boys learn to play and develop their golf at the complex each year. Ian Bonser, owner of 3 Hammers, is excited to see what this year’s Search for a Star uncovers, “Over the last 30 years we have uncovered some great talent here at 3 Hammers with over 30 becoming PGA Professionals. A lot of the children who go on to make a career in the industry are from non-golfing families, so the opportunities we create for them to try golf play a really important part in developing the sport here in the Wolverhampton community.”

The National StreetGolf Final will take place at 3 Hammers on 21st June. Brendon Pyle Chief Executive of The Golf Foundation is looking forward to seeing the reaction of the young golfers as they take part in their first competition, “StreetGolf is designed to give children the chance to unlock a talent that they may otherwise never have been aware of.  It’s such a joy to see the enjoyment the get from hitting a straight drive or sinking a putt. We’re delighted to be able to bring StreetGolf back to 3 Hammers. The facilities here are perfect for our event and the team here do everything they can to make the competitors day one to remember.”
