Edinburgh Females Get Their Own Back on Muirfield

By: Golfshake Editor | Thu 22 Dec 2016

Post by Sports Writer Derek Clements

THE female population of Edinburgh have got their own back on the stuffed shirts of the laughably named Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers based at Muirfield, by banning them from using a park bench in the city.

You will be aware that Muirfield has been removed from The Open Championship rota for failing to change its constitution to allow women to join the club. Members voted by 64% to 36% to let women in, but the required majority was 66.66%. They have promised to have a second vote, but are now dragging their feet over when that will take place.

So step forward and take a bow ladies for installing a plaque on a bench in Edinburgh’s West Princes Street Gardens which “excludes” members of the East Lothian course from sitting on it. It says: “The members of Muirfield Golf Club are hereby excluded from sitting on this bench. By the order of the female population.”

A post featuring a picture of the plaque on Facebook has gone viral, after being shared nearly 2,000 times and liked by 8,000 people. Comments range from people wholeheartedly agreeing with the sentiments of the plaque, to others branding, wait for it......sexist! Some people really don't get it, do they?

Jason Davis commented: “Why can’t men have a men only club? Why do women feel the need to protest and force their way in? There are many many women-only clubs (including golf clubs) and these don’t make headlines. Sometimes men want a space away from women, as women do away from men. Doesn’t mean its sexist or a bad thing!

Gil Thomson wrote: “A not unreasonable request as the ‘ female population of Edinburgh’ have obviously paid for the bench. However as the ‘gentleman members of Muirfield Golf Club’ started the club and have been responsible for its upkeep throughout the years is it unreasonable for them to decide who should play on their course?”

Well yes, Gil, it is completely unreasonable. This is the 21st century and Muirfield has been happy to see women spectators pour onto their course when The Open has been staged there, women who don't walk across the greens in high-heeled shoes!

Sadly, the sign has now been removed.
