Having played Machrihanish and Dunaverty several times I really look forward to getting the chance to get onto Kintyre to play golf whenever I can, with this in mind I was very excited to make my first trip to Machrihanish dunes today.

The weather was looking pretty poor with heavy rain and string winds, but undeterred we set off from Arran and made the drive down. A on arrival we were warmly greeted and told we could tee off early if we like, a quick putt later and we were on the 10th tee ready to begin in a howling North Easterly wind.

Right from the off I was in love with the course, each hole was consistently great, with some massive contours on fairways and greens only adding to the occasion.

I really enjoyed all the par threes, especially the 14th and 15th, of the longer holes I thought the 17th, 1st and 8th stood out but the rest were of a very high standard.

It probably clouds my judgement that my scratch score was only 5 but I think I might actually prefer the dunes to the old course, but to be sure I'll just need to play them both a few more times to be sure!

This is unlike any other course you will play in this country. There are no trees, few bunkers (at least not where you are likely to hit your ball), the rough isnt too bad, and at 6300 yards off the white tees its not that long - but its the hardest course Ive ever played.

It appears that 18 tees and greens have been cut from virgin land right on the seashore, with a few bits of fairway mown in-between the dunes ... and that's it. There are lots of blind shots, wild bounces off the fairways and huge sloping greens - this is extreme golf. If you believe that the sport is a test of you against the course and that it isnt meant to be fair, this is the course for you.

Stunning, and in great condition, but fiendishly difficult. Loved it!

Note that you don't need a caddy or guide any more (although I'd definitely take a stroke saver), and we went round in 3 hours in pretty appalling weather conditions with hardly anyone else on the course.

Without a doubt the toughest course I have ever played.
Myself and three friends took advantage of an amazing offer on the website where we had two nights accommodation in a luxury cottage and unlimited golf for £79 per person.
The cottages were amazing and we were taken to the golf course and returned by mini bus whenever we wanted.
We played off the whites on day one (pretty windy) and were totally destroyed by the course. On your first round they send you round with a complimentary guide to give you a clue where to aim as there are quite a few blind shots.
On day two we played the blues (crazy tough) and went back to the whites on day 3.
We had a look at the black tees and thought they would totally destroy us so showed a bit of sense.
The fairways are old style links with hills and bumps everywhere.
However it was the greens that gave us the most fun.
There are so many slopes on each green that you had to have a really good look for your putting line. On one hole, one of my friends lay down on the green in a hollow (around four feet deep) and we could not see him from the other end.
The 8th hole is rightly scored as the toughest on the course.
A long drive is required followed by a shot of around 200 yards to the green played over a hollow (balls in this are usually lost).
The clubhouse is fairly small but does excellent food and the staff are without a doubt the friendliest I have ever encountered on a golf course.
There are huge developments planned over the next few years including a huge clubhouse.
I would definitely advise anybody who can to go and play this wonderful course.

Pga Outing

Playing thru, over and round sand Dunes on fairly open fairways, some blind hole's, few dogleg's is challenging but fun.

First time playing the course, it is long, it is interesting and you have to be creative round the greens. The course was in very good condition apart from a few greens which were patchy in places. Overall this is a very good course and especially playing on the Bunkered Magazine vouchers it is well worth a visit.

Played this course in early September 2013 and fortunately it was a lovely, warm, calm day. Played off the blue tees due to our 4 ball being of different standards. I can only describe this course as 'crazy golf'. There is numerous blind shots throughout the course and some mental greens. To be fair the general condition of the course was excellent and the staff were very friendly. Disappointing clubhouse and some of the walks between the holes is lengthy. I enjoyed the day and had a good laugh at some crazy shots and putts, not for a serious golfer though. Scored 87, handicap 11.
