HOLE 1 PAR 4
A GENTLE OPENING HOLE HEADING SLIGHTLY UPHILL TO A GENEROUS
GREEN .A POSITIONAL TEE SHOT IS BETTER VALUE THAN A FULLBLOODED
DRIVER FOR MOST. THE SECOND SHOT IS A LITTLE LONGER
THAN IT LOOKS ,SO BEWARE OF THE POT BUNKER ON THE FRONT
RIGHT SIDE OF THE GREEN.
HOLE 2 PAR 5
AN EASY PAR 5 AT FIRST SIGHT.USUALLY PLAYED INTO A HEADWIND,
WITH A FAIRWAY BUNKER IN PERFECT RANGE FOR THE MIS HIT 2ND
SHOT UP THE LEFT SIDE OF THE FAIRWAY.SHOTS TOWARD THE GREEN
ARE A PREMIUM AS THE OUT OF BOUNDS NARROWS, THE CLOSER YOU
GET TO THE LONGEST GREEN ON THE COURSE.
HOLE 3 PAR 4
AN IMPROVED HOLE WITH A SLIGHTLY ELAVATED TEE LOOKING
STRAIGHT TOWARDS THE LAKE ACROSS THE FRONT OF THE GREEN.A
FAIRWAY WOOD OR HYBRID FROM THE TEE WILL SET UP THE
STRAIGHT FORWARD SHORT IRON TO THE GREEN.BEWARE THE SLIGHT
DOWNHILL LIE OR YOUR SHOT COULD END UP WET!
HOLE 4 PAR 3
A STRONG PAR 3 WITH BUNKERS ON THE FRONT AND LEFT SIDE
AWAITING A MIS HIT SHOT TRAVELLING ON THE PREVAILING
WIND.AIM FOR THE RIGHT HALF OF THE GREEN.
HOLE 5 PAR 4
STROKE INDEX 1 HOLE. INTO A HEAD WIND WITH A NARROW LANDING
AREA AND BUNKERS SURROUNDING THE GREEN, WHICH IS
DECEPTIVELY LONG AND SLIGHTLY UPHILL FROM THE TEE.OH AND DID
I MENTION THE OUT OF BOUNDS 5 PACES OVER THE GREEN?
HOLE 6 PAR 3
MY PARTICULAR FAVOURITE HOLE. WATER ON THE FRONT RIGHT
THIRD PROTECTING THE SLIGHTLY RAISED GREEN, WITH A BUNKER
SITTING IN WAIT BEHIND THE MIDDLE PORTION OF AWIDE, YET
SHALLOW GREEN.A PREMIUM IS ON CLUB SELECTION TO SECURE A
PAR HERE.
HOLE 7 PAR 4
BACK INTO THE PREVAILING WIND, DECISIONS HAVE TO BE MADE
WITH THE TEE SHOT.THEIR ARE CROSS BUNKERS AT AROUND 190
METRES (210YARDS) AND HERE LIES THE REAL DIFFICULTY. CAN YOU
GET OVER. THE SECOND SHOT FROM THERE IS A MID/ SHORT IRON TO A
GREEN GUARDED BY BUNKERS IN THE FRONT LEFT CORNER OF THE
GREEN.
HOLE 8 PAR 5
AN OPPORTUNITY TO GRIP IT AND RIP IT HERE. A GOOD DRIVE IN THE
FAIRWAY GIVES THE PLAYER ON THIS PAR 5 A CHANCE TO TAKE THE
GREEN ON WITH THEIR NEXT SHOT.BEWARE THOUGH, A MIS HIT AND
THE GORSE COLLECTS THE BALL, IF YOU CHOOSE THE WRONG LINE OR
PLAY SAFE WITH EXTRA CLUB THE WATER BEHIND THE GREEN COMES
INTO PLAY.PLAY THE HOLE AS A 3 SHOTTER AND THE PAR WILL BE
SECURED.TRY THE SHORT CUT AND IT COULD BE A CARDWRECKER.
HOLE 9 PAR 4
AN EXCELLENT VIEW OF THE THAMES ESTUARY FROM THE TEE. A
DOWN HILL PAR 4 WITH A NARROW LANDING AREA IF YOU CAN AVOID
THE BUNKERS ON THE RIGHT.THE SECOND SHOT TOWARD THE GREEN
IS OFTEN PLAYED ON A SLIGHT DOWNHILL LIE.SO MAKE SURE YOU
KEEP A SMOOTH SWING GOING HERE TO GIVE YOURSELF A CHANCE TO
STAY IN PLAY.A NARROW ENTRANCE TO THE EVEN NARROWER GREEN
CAN MAKE EVEN A SIMPLE PITCH SHOT DIFFICULT TO GET CLOSE TO
THE FLAG ON THIS THREE LEVEL GREEN. MAKE A PAR HERE AND PAT
YOURSELF ON THE BACK AND MOVE ON.
HOLE 10 PAR 3
THE SHORTEST HOLE ON THE COURSE. A STRAIGHT FORWARD PAR 3 .
HIT A SOLID SHORT IRON HERE AND SET YOURSELF UP FOR AN EASY
PAR.
HOLE 11 PAR5
THE LONGEST HOLE OUT THERE. 500METRES (565 YARDS) USUALLY
WITH A CROSS WIND AND OUT OF BOUNDS IN PLAY FROM THE TEE ON
THE RIGHT.GET THE TEE SHOT AWAY AND EVERYTHING IS LAID OUT
BEFORE YOU UP TO THE GREEN. A LARGE GREEN THAT SLOPES AWAY
FROM FRONT TO BACK, MAKING JUDGEMENT FOR A PITCH SHOT IS NOT
AS EASY AS IT APPEARS.
HOLE 12 PAR4
BUNKERS UP THE LEFT HAND SIDE PROTECT THE SAFEST SIDE TO
ATTACK THE GREEN. DOWN THE RIGHT IS A CONUNDERUM OF BUSHES
WAITING FOR THE ERRANT TEE SHOT.FROM THE FAIRWAY A
MID/SHORT IRON TO THE GREEN WILL GIVE YOU A CHANCE FOR A PAR,
ONLY IF YOU PAY ATTENTION TO THE SLOPEY GREEN.
HOLE 13 PAR3
AN INVITING PAR 3 EVEN THOUGH IT`S 200METRES (222 YARDS) LONG.
SLIGHTY DOWNHILL AND HELP FROM THE WIND WILL GIVE YOU A
CHANCE TO MAKE A PAR AND MOVE ON, SCORE INTACT.
COME UP SHORT AND THE FRONT CORNER BUNKERS COULD LEAVE
YOU WITH A BIT OF A CHALLENGE TO SCORE 3.
HOLE 14 PAR4
A TOUGH PAR 4, (ESPECIALLY AFTER NO.13) A GOOD DRIVE WILL LEAVE
A FAIRWAY METAL FOR MANY TO A SLIGHTLY RAISED GREEN . THE
GREEN ITSELF IS FLAT, GIVING A FAIR CHANCE TO SAVE A PAR.
HOLE 15 PAR 5
A STRAIGHT PAR 5 WITH 2 BUNKERS AWAITING YOUR DRIVE ON THE
LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE FAIRWAY.BUNKERS WAIT UP THE RIGHT
NEARER THE GREEN FOR A “TIRED” SHOT. THE GREEN IS LARGE AND
FLAT AND ACTUALLY SHARES AS A DOUBLE GREEN WITH HOLE 8.
HOLE 16 PAR 4
DOWNHILL A LITTLE WHICH DECEIVES THE DIFFICULTY. A LARGE
BUNKER ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE FAIRWAY CAN ENCOURAGE A
PUSHED DRIVE INTO THE BUSHES ON THE RIGHT. FROM THE FAIRWAY
A MID IRON HIT WELL WILL STOP ON THE SLOPEY GREEN. LAND SHORT
AND A SWALE MAY NOT GIVE A FAIR BOUNCE AND BRINGS THE
GREENSIDE BUNKERS INTO PLAY.A DECEPTIVE GREEN, SO PAY
ATTENTION WHEN LINING UP EVEN THE SHORTEST PUTT.
HOLE 17 PAR 4
A SLIGHT DOG LEG LEFT BUT WITH THE OPPOSITE CAMBER ON THE
FAIRWAY THROWING YOUR AIM AND BALL TO THE RIGHT.THE
PERFECT LINE IS OVER THE LEFT BUNKERS, SO YOU FINISH IN THE
MIDDLE OF THE FAIRWAY.A SECOND SHOT SLIGHTLY UPHILL AGAIN TO
A LARGE GREEN WHICH IS PROTECTED BY A “MAGNETIC” BUNKER ON
THE RIGHT. THE GREEN IS FLAT AT THE FRONT, BUT PAY ATTENTION IF
THE HOLE IS IN THE BACK HALF OF THE GREEN.
HOLE 18 PAR 4
A PANORAMIC VIEW DOWN THE LAST.A STRAIGHT TEE SHOT IS A MUST
HERE. LEFT AND YOU`RE RELOADING, OUT OF BOUNDS.RIGHT AND THE
COPSE OF TREES THAT SITS BETWEEN THIS HOLE AND NO.1 WILL GET
YOU. NO REAL NEED FOR A DRIVER LUCKILY. A FAIRWAY CLUB OR
JUST YOUR FAVOURITE IRON WILL LEAVE YOU A MID/SHORT IRON TO A
RECEPTIVE GREEN. HIT A LITTLE LEFT THOUGH AND WATER AWAITS.
PUSH YOUR SHOT RIGHT AND YOU FACE THE AGONY OF A BUNKER
SHOT LOOKING AT THE LAKE BEYOND THE GREEN.
THE GOLF COURSE PLAYS DIFFERENTLY EVERY DAY, THE WIND
DIRECTION MAKES YESTERDAYS HOLE EASIER OR HARDER. IN THE
SUMMER THE COURSE PLAYS FAST AND RUNNING, WITH THE WINTER
MONTHS STAYING AS DRY AS ANYWHERE IN ESSEX. ST CLERES HALL
WILL TEST YOUR SKILL AND IMAGINATION EACH TIME YOU PLAY
HERE.

All eighteen holes are interesting and offer different challenges without any horror holes. A proper greenkeeper has just been appointed and there has been a noticable improvement, with green quality found normally only on private courses.
Very good professional, David Wood, provides excellent lessons.

Fairways are fair but playing partner and I both lost balls on the fairway so how?
Greens are not the greatest but better that a lot of other pay to play, but some look like a helicoper has landed on with the amount of holes and dents and torn up turf, and another has a lovely water feature on the back part of the green where it looks like there are breeding frogs.
It is a fair course, which could be made better with some attention being paid to it.
Course could be very good if attention paid to it, pro shop on the other hand just requires an overhaul of staff who actually do their job.
I was waiting for 10minutes in the pro shop to pay for my round, looked in the back of the shop to find someone, no one about, and only upon walking out of the shop, does someone say do you need some help, as the elderly gentleman was too interested in talking to someone he knew around the corner in the carpark than booking people in for their teetimes.
Going into the clib house is the same thing, one member of staff to run everything felt sorry for her, but again massive attitude problem it was a massive chore for when asking for a drink or food, it was as if I asked her to turn coal into diamonds using nothing but her hands.
I will play the course again as I like the lay out of the holes and it does force you to play straight or otherwise its good bye ball and a few drivable par 4s if you are a long hitter and a couple of holes in which you have to lay up to be able to attack the hole which I like compared to other courses whcih for me are get the big stick out and let it fly on every hole without any thinking or positioning required.
