A reasonable test of golf, plays like an inland links. Good greens, brutal rough but the fairways needed a cut. Friendly welcome in the clubhouse but the place could do with modernising. Good value on a voucher.

Average course not the best meant to be shutting down next year so it's not being looked after very well

The course has a decent layout and could potentially be a good course but it was seriously let down by the greens. They were all in terrible condition and barely playable

Foot golf only
The greens are in credibly poor condition and it would appear the main focus here is foot golf. The greens are not suitable at all for regular golf. The course itself is fine, it just the greens that let it down. The course also has a driving range which looked like a decent facility.

I used to be a member at this club back in 2007 for a period of 4 years and it used to be a great club to play with good drainage some quality fairways and well manicured greens. So when my local course was flooded this weekend and desperate to get out and play a round of golf with my son and a friend of mine I went to teeofftimes and booked at St Cleres knowing that in the past the course would still be playable. This cost £20 at head! First thing that I noticed was the once well run, well stocked and clean pro shop was now a shabby looking cafe with hardly any golfing equipment for sale, it was a sad shadow of what it once was! the toilet facilities now consist of a single stall at the rear of the pro shop with no changing facilities at all. Onto the course! What was once a well kept and well manicured course is now a shambles! the fairways are hardly determinable from the rough and the deep rough would require a search team of at least fifty to locate your ball even if it just crept in from the rough/fairway (as I said hard to determine one from the other)! The greens are a disgrace! They are more akin to the surface of the moon than a regulation green and reminded me of a teenager with a serious bout of acne. To read the greens would need a degree in physics to determine the course of your ball once hit making them almost impossible to drop a ball into the cup (putting is my strongest element of my game but yesterday made me look like a chimp who had never seen a putter or even heard of the game of golf). Now onto the people playing a round out on the course! Ok let me say I am no snob but I expect a certain standard on the course (the usual trousers, golf shoes......... A SET OF CLUBS PER PLAYER!) but no St Cleres require none of these things anymore! One fourball in front of us were sharing 2 sets of clubs between the four of them and were wearing jeans and trainers (you can imagine the standard of their golf) and had no concept of the rules! This was beyond frustrating being stuck behind them (I encourage people to take up the game and perhaps this is now the course to cut your teeth but I will say if this is the first place you ever play golf you may be put off the game for life). Back to the club house............ what club house?? the once comfy pleasant old manor house that was once the club house is now closed but fear not!!! Yes you can have a beer in the transport cafe.... sorry not transport cafe, Pro shop!!! I appreciate that the weather has been bad beyond believe of late but St Cleres used to be immune to poor weather due to the profesional team of greens Keepers that used to maintain the course (in the good old days you would see at least 4 or 5 greens keepers maintaining the course all day everyday, sad to say I didnt spot a single member of staff on the course at all yesterday)! The staff have no interest in the club any longer and are nly interested in taking your money! The club pro................ if you can call him that? More like a bouncer from bas vegas than a pro golfer (I will have money he has no qualifications from any golfing body) was rude and unhelpful! When we complained about the state of the course he explained that the fairways had been cut two weeks ago and that the greens had been spiked about the same time! No wonder David who used to be the club pro left in September of last year I can only imagine he couldnt bare the embaressment that St Cleres has now become! To sum up.... DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY PLAYING THIS COURSE!!!!

Ive played here a number of times and watched the course slowly deteriorate , staff should be working at the co-op preferably in an non-customer facing role , toilet cleaning duties possibly , £20 and 4 hours of my life wasted , i suppose if enough people play there ,the grass might get trodden down into something resembling fairways ,but only hand grenades will sort the greens out.

What a shame. We arrived on a groupon voucher offering excellent value unfortunately it quickly went down hill. The fairways were non existent and comparable with the rough on other venues. Venture into the actual rough and the ball is gone. Unfortunately the fairway is four foot wide in some place so be accurate. The crowning moment was when on the eighth a four ball all hit their t shots well to a dog leg left only to have crows who were watching pick up each ball and fly off. Low and behold I hit mine with fingers crossed and a crow hopped along picked it up and flew off. As I said its just a shame as the layout is good with some interesting holes and some real risk reward. Unfortunately by the end the reward was finishing and going home - such a shame!...

I bought unlimited golf for a day plus bacon roll and tea/coffee for 2 from Groupon for £18. You can't go wrong I thought. Yes you can. The car park is like a quarry. The 'pro shop' is a shed, staffed by a young chap who was more interested in his mobile phone than me. The clubhouse is what I imagine was once a small stately home (St Cleres Hall?) but is now virtually falling down. There was only one member of staff. The poor girl was very polite but was really struggling on her own. The course is in truly horrifying condition. The fairways are like a school playing field, with huge clumps of weeds and uneven surfaces that send your ball in a random direction on impact. The greens are brown, bald, full of holes and weeds and sometimes waterlogged, all at the same time. I kid you not. It is the worst golf course I have ever played by a country mile. It is so bad we only played one round. I would not play it again for free. In fact I wouldn't play it if you paid me £50. Avoid like the plague.
