Basildon is a very down to earth club which has some nice holes. It feels old fashioned and much more of a local members club than set up for visitors.

It is surrounded by newer sports facilities such as a gym and paddle courts which make it feel busier than it is when you arrive.

We made use of a special deal which I found tucked away in their website meaning it cost us ?28 each including a buggy which was very reasonable. And I would definitely advise using a buggy on this physically demanding course.

The weather has been very hot recently meaning that much of the course was bare and in poor condition. Although credit to the greenkeepers the tee boxes and greens were very good.

It does have some lovely parkland holes but the 12th and particularly the 14th are awful holes. I would confidently say the 14th is a poor apology for a hole and the worst I've ever played. It is a 110 yard par 3 with a big poorly maintained bunker in front of it and a massive pile of earth and rubble dumped to the left.

The other big problem with the course were some of the basic standards around the place. My golfing ability means I've no place at the golf snob table but I can see why some etiquette should be enforced.

Mid way through our round out of nowhere we found ourselves held up by a party which included a guy in white vest and football shorts. We were also held up by two groups playing ahead who had one less set of clubs than players. It certainly doesn't help attract visitors to your club and these combined with much of the course condition means I won't return to play at Basildon again.

To end on a positive note, while the club house is homely and again old fashioned the ladies who work in there were extremely helpful and a great advert for the club.

Good condition, difficult

Fairways and greens were in very good condition. Course is difficult - some long par 3s and lots of slopes and trees. Nice clubhouse, friendly staff. Good value

Course was in bad condition due to excess rain .allowing buggies on the course while bad weather exists and continues is a big mistake..surrounding greens have now tyre tracks making short games impossible.hopefully come summer would be a challenging course.

Too wet

It always has been an interesting layout however, because of the amount of rain we have had it shouldn't have been open.

My favourite course!

Played here for about 15 years from late 70s. Lovely interesting course. Friendly to beginners whilst still being a good challenge to good players my best round was 79 so I''m no expert but was pretty decent eventually!

Challenging course. Some long holes. Nice practice facilities. Club house nice. Could do with a lick of paint. Food very good though.
