Overall a course certainly with more positives than negatives but there were a few smaller things that irked me a little bit, which I’ll come to later. First let’s start off with the many good things. Upon arrival, I thought the friendliness of the professional was top notch, he was very helpful and it was nice to be served by someone with a smile on his face. The main reason we decided to play this course in mid to late march was because typically links courses this time of year are in better condition and we’d heard that the greens and fairways are usually in good condition here at Whitby. Well, as far as the greens are concerned they were top notch. These were one of the best, if not the best greens I have played in mid march for a long time (maybe ever) so congratulations to the course on achieving this. The fairways were quite wet still though and this surprised us because there had been little rain recently. To be fair, for this time of year it is not proper to judge them properly though and they were still quite good.
The course to me didn’t always feel like a links, despite it’s proximity to the sea. As aforementioned, the ground was quite soft and unlike the sandier/harder surfaces of a lot of links courses I’ve played. Plus the 7 holes over the road play effectively like a parkland really. There are some interesting holes on the course. The first is a really good start, short par 4 which gives you options. The two holes played over the ravine are top notch too (6 & 18) and I thought the 10th hole over the road was pretty cool. However, at times a number of holes were quite repetitive and actually a tough test in terms of length. I am quite a long hitter of the ball but didn’t hit a single iron off any tee! There are only three par 3s on the whole course, a couple of which aren’t very good IMO. The 14th is an incredibly boring and pointless hole. It’s 200 yards, slightly downhill with no hazards or interesting aspects to it. The 17th is a 249 yard (yes 249 yards) par 3 downhill a little bit which would require a driver for most men to hit off the tee, certainly unless the ground was really firm. What is honestly the point of a 250 yard par 3? Pretty ridiculous and it would be a more interesting and fun hole to make it into a short par 4, there’s just no need to have such a hard hole and that stage of a round.
The stroke index 1 2 & 3 holes certainly play to their difficulty and all require a long drive plus a good second shot probably hit with a 3 wood/rescue or long iron. There are certain holes where you have to hit it long off the tee to give yourself a chance of getting on in two. I wouldn’t really recommend this course to people who can’t hit it very long, you will be in for a difficult round on half a dozen of the holes. But overall this is a very nice course and of course the views are excellent throughout. At just £10 it is also excellent value for money. The two suggestions I’d give are make the 17th a par 4 and do something to make 14 more exciting.

Great course with great views. I played on a Friday and was surprisingly quiet and with an older clientele. Definitely be playing again when I'm in the area

Signature holes 6th and 18 where you play over a "ravine" and a good drive is essential.
All in all an enjoyable course and look forward to returning same time last year.
Shot 89, handicap 20 including 4 pars and a birdie on the run around the turn.
My partner and I totted up our Better Ball scores and we had a nett 62!!
