What the club says: It is the ideal type of holiday course, not too long or difficult for the moderate player provided a reasonable degree of accuracy is achieved. "Wild hitters" can be severely punished, as some of the hazards are quite unusual. The most striking is the wild cleft in the Cliffs known as "Upgang Ravine" which has to be driven when playing the 6th and 18th holes. The degree of driving difficulty on many an occasion is decided by the prevailing wind which may come from either the North Sea or the moors.

The course is interesting and the greens were in good condition. Not an easy course if you don't know it with plenty of blind shots and hazards that you cannot see. It was blowing a gale throughout which made it brutal for the average golfer. There's a large ravine you play over unless playing off the red tees, and the footbridge is condemned, resulting in a very long and steep detour that has to be done twice.

Course in great condition, only negative being the bunkers that need a little more sand. Interesting layout particularly the coastal side of course. Connecting footbridge still out of commission meaning that there are two long walks (7th and 18th) down and up the ravine adding 10 minutes to the round. Pace good and friendly members.

Great short course, shame link bridge is out

Shortish course in good condition with fast greens. Great views on cliffside holes and generally an interesting layout. Shame that the link bridge over the ravine is out. Bunker sand quality needs some attention. Very friendly and good pace.

Short but interesting with tricky winds

Winter tees, fairway mats, but all greens in play, generally in good condition for time of year. Bridge out that adds 10 minutes to round that said pace of play good. Everyone friendly.

Shortish, mainly clifftop interesting course

Fairways and greens in good condition. There are a few pretty short holes but it is still challenging overall especially with the wind prevalent.12 of the holes are on the coastal side of the coast road and those 12 are split 7/5 across a ravine with two of the drives needing to carry the ravine. At present the bridge connecting the two sides of the ravine is out of commission and there is an additional 5 minute walk in each direction to circumvent this.

Short but interesting with tricky winds

Very muddy in places and required to use mat on fairways. Very windy but sunny day. Fairways and green heavy to allow course to recover from winter/rains. Rough not as bad as pro suggested. Winds made it a challenge but helped to drive a par 4 green however a well hit high 3 iron made around 120 yards on another hole.

Always a pleasure but less so with the third closed

Whitby is one of my favourite courses in the area, however the third being totally closed and the fourth having its tee moved due to the third works definitely affects the ratings this time. Aside from the aforementioned work, the course was in good condition for the time of the year and greens although having treatment were fast and true. As always very pleasant members and a pleasure to play even on an extremely windy day (added to the fun!).

Golf trip venue 2022

Small group of 7 on a golf trip and had a ball here. Really warm welcome. Great course which challenged both low and high handicappers. It's the wind which provides the difficulty here. 2mph both days. The views are fantastic and the course was in fabulous nick. We are here too and the food and service was excellent.

The fairways were quite narrow so more often then not you were playing out of whispy grass, also there were a couple of ravines you had to get over which made for some great teeing off shots.Loved it.

Enjoyable forgiving course

New course layout that although a little shorter nevertheless still interesting and better as the course feels more integrated rather than the two road separated sections. The short holes greens are being protected with new ditches. Greens were heavily sanded and fast. Bunkers and fairways in good condition.

great views and a challenging course

11 of the holes played on the clifftop with great views fortunately we had a windless day which I believe is rare. Good challenge with rolling fairways in good condition, greens not quite so good but it is getting late in the year and signs they were being worked on. Definitely revisit

Interesting cliff top course

Very windy on day played, 9-7-2 course configuration with middle 7 over road away from cliff playing around a housing estate and a little back and forth. However, the 11 on the cliff side are fun to play especially the 4th, 6th and 18th over ravines. Course generous and fairways in great condition, but the greens, having recently been worked on, were terrible and the only down side, apart from the bar closing at 4.30pm. Very enjoyable overall.

Poor condition

A very flat course, with promise due to the challenging rough, but considerably let down by awful greens (and pretty bad tee boxes).

Not worth the weekend green fee until the greens significantly improve, would not rush back unfortunately.

Hopefully a full winter of recovery will leave them in better condition for next year.

I played Whitby golf club on 28th January and found it to be in great condition for the time of year. The club being a bit unorthodox to what I am used to is a breath of fresh air, this is how golf clubs should be. As far as value for money is concerned it's the best green fees I've ever paid and will most definitely play again when I am up that way. Highly recommend a visit if ever you are in the area.

Played on a Monday where there were discounted green fees at £12.50. Great value. Fantastic coastal views. Course is challenging especially with the wind but suits all handicaps due to variety of distances on the holes. Tees and fairways were pristine but the greens were quite bare in places (May end 2019). If they were much greener, they would be perfect because they have challenging contours and some need good accuracy due to shape and pin positions. Although patchy, they were smooth with little ball bobbling when putted.
Did use clubhouse so can’t comment on food or bar but the Pro Shop attendant was very friendly and helpful. Well worth a play especially if on holiday in the area.
