Great weekend venue
Jubilee CourseThe Jubilee Course provides a decent examination of links golf skills with undulating greens, run off areas and tight fairway lies. This is a very playable course but make sure you bring your short game if you want to score well as the green complexes are very tricky.
The home stretch is very enjoyable as you play back in towards the Auld Grey Toun.
Castle Course
A very difficult but enjoyable course. All you can see as you drive through the dunes to the clubhouse are dunes, dunes and more dunes, with not a fairway or green in site, however all of the holes open out in the landing areas to give handicap players a fair but demanding test.
You’ll need your complimentary course planner to plot your way around here but don’t be put off, this is a superb championship course with great views over the sea and, from certain holes, St Andrews itself. Tremendous.
New Course
The gentlest test of the 5 courses I have played at St Andrews, but enjoyable nevertheless. The terrain is flatter than the other courses and therefore the greens and green complexes aren’t as tricky, which came as a relief to me after a 2 rounds on the Castle Course the day before.
The New Course is a great way to start off or round off a golf break on the links and the opening and closing holes provide great views of the Old Course Hotel. If playing on a Sunday, try to play early in the morning as, when we visited, there were sometimes 3 groups waiting on the opening holes whereas we sailed around from our 7.52am start.
