The Strand is a true world class links with a first hole that has one of the great views in world golf, while the 'Riverside' is an sporty and quirky links that is a joy to play.

The course is split on 2 sides of the main road between Portstewart and Portrush. Holes 1-5 on the sea side, then you cross over to play 6-15, crossing back over to the sea for the final 3.
Don't be thinking this is a links course though - although the holes beside the sea do resemble a proper links (when the fairways are kept in good condition). Also, there is not one bunker on the course which is unusual for a links.
I really enjoyed playing this course a few years ago when the handicap was up in the 20's but as it has dropped to mid teens I just don't feel the course is challenging enough.
Having said all that, there are very few better places to be on a bright sunny Sunday morning during the summer.
The one thing about the course is the wind. It always blows - well 9 times out of every 10 anyway. Not really a massive surprise given the fact that it is in Ireland.
Something else not that surprising is that the bright sunny mornings mentioned earlier don't really happen that often. I have also played this course in the depths of winter - wind and rain (sometimes sleet) coming at you sideways. In a sadistic sort of way i enjoy these rounds as much as the summer ones.
All in all I would say this is a good course to get started on, and at £17.50 per round at the weekends, you can't really argue. I do think that recently the course maintenance has gone to the dogs a bit and even for the small gree fees I still think some more time could be spent looking after the course.
