I had a mare of a round today but striking some very random shots, however this is a course which bites you in the ass when things go wrong. It is very tight in places and its "natural" contours of the land make it a real challenge despite being a very short course on paper.
The course could do with some investment into bins and ball cleaners. That said the greens and fairways were in generally good condition with only the odd green looking a little patchy in the corners. That said it is a good value round with some beautiful landscape. I reviewed this course in more detail on the 12-August 2015.

Painswick golf course has multiple aspects. I will start off with the negatives, which will probably sound harsher than what they are intended. The walkers which are entitled to walk freely around the course sometimes show little consideration to the golfer who is about to drive off. That said many are amazing and one helped me find a lost ball. Small children or dog walkers were randomly playing in the middle of the fairway (probably quite a safe ball but we did find ourselves waiting while place to be considering how I played), which can slow play down. Because there are many dog walkers on that course there are quite a few dog turds around the course both o natural and in bags which is rather unpleasant. I played this course midweek in the August and the course was very quiet, however I can imagine it being very cramped on weekends and it being off putting and rushed on shared fairways which cross or run parallel on some holes. Trolleys are also not really useable and I would recommend you carry your bag of sticks.
Now the good stuff. The members, staff and ramblers were all very friendly and we had some lovely chats to them, which you don’t often get at some golf courses. The views are breathtaking at the 6th tee on the top of the Painswick beacon is amazing, you can see for miles over Gloucester and beyond. I got my camera out and took many photos and we forgot about golf for 5 minutes (there was one or two other golfer on the course). As a general rule there are a few lovely views on this course. The terrain is rough though with massive undulation which is extremely challenging for the novice golfer who finds his ball lost in the long grass, wild flowers and bushes. The golf holes are extremely well designed with multiple blind holes shooting over tuff walls or into “bowls” along quarries. The web site is very use full giving a description of the holes and each hole has its own name. It also states that some holes appear in a book which lists the top 100 holes in the UK, which I can certainly believe now I have played it. I will quote my friend who I played “if a general course had two or three holes as good as Painswick golf course then it would be considered a good course”. Each hole was very different even the two par 5s which shared the same fairway were considerably different from each other. Many times on my local courses, it feels like I play the same hole on a different part of the course, but here each hole at Painswick golf course is unique. There is rarely a forgiving tee shot and you must be a consistent hitting of the ball. Multiple times I had to hit three from the tee, this course punishes the inconsistent player but it was a lot of fun. The greens were firm but fair and in good condition but not the best I have played on locally (South Gloucestershire). This is an excellent mature course which a single figure handicap player will flourish on, however my unofficial handicap of 15 was pummelled to shooting 33 over par, mainly due to penalty strokes to losing balls from the tee. This course has great value for money at £15 a round and I will certainly be playing here again. Going back to my more local golf courses is going to seem relatively boring now.
