We were thrilled to be able to play golf at all on what was an appalling day of mizzle, sleet and cold wind. It was our fingers that suffered the most. Very friendly course and great value for money

Awesome little course

I love the course & when a hole goes wrong I hate it..

The staff are always helpful.

Greens were in excellent condition, the course is looking fantastic.

I do think everyone should play golf here at least once, I appreciate it is a marmite course. You'll love it or hate it.

I come here once or twice a year.

I don't think being public land is an issue if the people using the area were vaguely educated in golf.

A family picnic on a fairway probably isn't safe.

I did talk to them and they seemed unaware that it was a golf course, despite being situated between two holes on a shared fairway... The course isn't busy....

Great fun- you must play

What a great experience it is to play Painswick. It’s short, 7 par 3’s, rocky paths and people wandering all over the course, but......
It’s such fun. Lots of really interesting holes with the requirement to shape shots and think your way round the course. I was fortunate to play it with someone who knew their way round, without that I can see why you might get frustrated as Finding your way round might be a challenge. Loved the elevated tees, the blind Par 3’s played over all sorts of ancient earthworks, the amazing views from the tees and greens near the beacon.
The only downside to the round was that the 3rd hole was out of play because some total scumbag has vandalised the green with what looks like a motorbike. It just baffles me why someone would go to all that trouble to destroy something?
If you are looking for golf with a clear line of sight to landing areas and all hazards visible, and a traditional par 72, then this course probably isn’t for you.
But, If you want a round where the golf is different from anything you will play normally, and each tee brings a new smile to your face, then don’t miss Painswick..
The clubhouse is nice as well, with welcoming and helpful staff.
Well done Painswick - Loved you!,

Played here June '19 .

As much as Cleeve Hill G.C. was a revelation the previous day this course was a bit of a letdown.
It's very short in length but a hard walk round due to it's undulations & steep stony paths from greens to tees .The 1st hole ,that almost feels like you are going 45 degrees uphill ,sets the tone .There are also quite a few shared fairways & it did feel a bit crammed in . Sure some holes are quirky & unique but it was the holes themselves that didn't do it for me either as well as the hard walk.
There are good views from the beacon at the course high point ( unfortunately it rained when we played) & it's a peaceful place to play .

The greens weren't at their best on the visit & some tee direction signs wouldn't go amiss as the routing was a bit confusing in places .
Good value at £12 on tee off times but maybe less so at £20 on the standard club rate for a p.m. weekday round for what you get .
I am all up for a unique ,quirky ,hilly course which is why i chose it but it didn't really do it for me & it's a course for me to tick off & not one i would look forward to playing again.

Awesome course

It is a lovely course but the hot summer has baked it badly. It is playing more like crazy golf than actual golf at the moment. The greens need watering with large areas of bare or patchy putting surface and the fairways are like concrete so even a good tee shot will end up in the rough...

If you want to play golf here personally I would wait unti we have rain. That said the local competition was very kind in letting us go first.

It is a good value course if you book from teeofftimes, no one was there to meet us but you can get your score cards from inside the club house.

A bucket list course

A bit up and down if that's your bag. A couple of shared fairways and a number of quaries to negotiate and a hill fort. No a course to contempate in bad weather but a good experience and yardage wise it's not that long. But there are a couple of par three holes that I couldn't quite reach with my driver and it wan't really that windy. .

I had a mare of a round today but striking some very random shots, however this is a course which bites you in the ass when things go wrong. It is very tight in places and its "natural" contours of the land make it a real challenge despite being a very short course on paper.

The course could do with some investment into bins and ball cleaners. That said the greens and fairways were in generally good condition with only the odd green looking a little patchy in the corners. That said it is a good value round with some beautiful landscape. I reviewed this course in more detail on the 12-August 2015.

A great morning of golf. A short but tight golf course carved into the landscape; this is an absolute gem. The views from the 6th tee are fantastic on a clear day. The course could be improved by a new set of winter tee mats, similar to the one on the 1st tee; one of a few which you could actually place a tee peg, and though using yardage stakes on the edge of the fairways rather than disks in the middle of them. Simple, quick wins which would add to this lovely little course.

I look forward to my next round.

(Round played: Aug 2015 - Score: 100 Handicap: 15.5)

Painswick golf course has multiple aspects. I will start off with the negatives, which will probably sound harsher than what they are intended. The walkers which are entitled to walk freely around the course sometimes show little consideration to the golfer who is about to drive off. That said many are amazing and one helped me find a lost ball. Small children or dog walkers were randomly playing in the middle of the fairway (probably quite a safe ball but we did find ourselves waiting while place to be considering how I played), which can slow play down. Because there are many dog walkers on that course there are quite a few dog turds around the course both o natural and in bags which is rather unpleasant. I played this course midweek in the August and the course was very quiet, however I can imagine it being very cramped on weekends and it being off putting and rushed on shared fairways which cross or run parallel on some holes. Trolleys are also not really useable and I would recommend you carry your bag of sticks.

Now the good stuff. The members, staff and ramblers were all very friendly and we had some lovely chats to them, which you don’t often get at some golf courses. The views are breathtaking at the 6th tee on the top of the Painswick beacon is amazing, you can see for miles over Gloucester and beyond. I got my camera out and took many photos and we forgot about golf for 5 minutes (there was one or two other golfer on the course). As a general rule there are a few lovely views on this course. The terrain is rough though with massive undulation which is extremely challenging for the novice golfer who finds his ball lost in the long grass, wild flowers and bushes. The golf holes are extremely well designed with multiple blind holes shooting over tuff walls or into “bowls” along quarries. The web site is very use full giving a description of the holes and each hole has its own name. It also states that some holes appear in a book which lists the top 100 holes in the UK, which I can certainly believe now I have played it. I will quote my friend who I played “if a general course had two or three holes as good as Painswick golf course then it would be considered a good course”. Each hole was very different even the two par 5s which shared the same fairway were considerably different from each other. Many times on my local courses, it feels like I play the same hole on a different part of the course, but here each hole at Painswick golf course is unique. There is rarely a forgiving tee shot and you must be a consistent hitting of the ball. Multiple times I had to hit three from the tee, this course punishes the inconsistent player but it was a lot of fun. The greens were firm but fair and in good condition but not the best I have played on locally (South Gloucestershire). This is an excellent mature course which a single figure handicap player will flourish on, however my unofficial handicap of 15 was pummelled to shooting 33 over par, mainly due to penalty strokes to losing balls from the tee. This course has great value for money at £15 a round and I will certainly be playing here again. Going back to my more local golf courses is going to seem relatively boring now.

Arriving at Painswick before the pro shop was open, we were warmly greeted by members who helped get us pointed in the right direction.

Painswick isn't a long course, and it doesn't have any bunkers, but it has lots of craters and hollows, small greens, a couple of short blind par 3's, and is a lot of fun.

It's also on a hill and is very scenic. The downside is that for some it won't be an easy walk, and on windy days (or very windy days, like my round today) it is very exposed.

What didn't I like? The 17th is played across a crossroads, and the potential to either a) have your shot bouncing down the road, or b) hitting a car which suddenly appears half way through your back swing, is a possibility. There are also a couple of shared fairways which I imagine can get busy, and that's without the walkers out with their dogs.

Overall though I really enjoyed playing here, and look forward to giving it another go soon.

A very interesting course, like other reviews have mentioned there are a number of great blind holes, though in our opinion they would benefit from bells on some of these; it was impossible to know whether those in front had cleared. During our round we experienced walkers, dogs, cyclists and horse riders on the course, so we were left waiting on some tee's until they were out of sight! Even though it was short, the course was not easy to follow, so the plan provided by the Pro was invaluable! The greens were very slow, and were not over generous in size. Personally, due to the quirkiness of the course, I would recommend giving Painswick a try (strategic layout, you could leave your driver at home); however it may not suit everyone. Finally, the members were very friendly and made us feel very welcome, overall an enjoyable day with unbelievable views.

It's hard to know what to write about Painswick. Perhaps expectations played a part here and I don't want to be too critical, but in all honestly I left the course wondering what on Earth the fuss was about. Having played Cleeve, and quite a few other courses you might label 'quirky', I had quite high expectations on a beautiful October Day, not too windy, and everything set up for a good round. I gave it a few holes to get going, but by the 11th or so, I realised that sometimes quirky just means 'a bit rubbish'. Then views are good, but pretty much everything else about the course isn't. The condition is easily forgivable given the land and restrictions in place. And my criticism isn't aimed at the club either. It is what it is. But what it is, is just a fairly poor golf course, with some admittedly 'interesting' holes and perspectives. For example, the 6th is definitely a great hole, and some aspects of the hole it shares a fairway with are nice to look at. But at very few points do these bits add up to anything recognisable as a decent golf hole. Of course, everyone makes their own mind up, but the fact that Painswick is being touted as a 'must-play' when there are so many other better options out there is something that perplexed me and my playing partner. Cleeve is quirky too. But under the surface there are some genuinely great holes at Cleeve, and you can imagine it being a really top class course if it wasn't based on common land. So, I don't blame Painswick at all. It's a course on a hill, with good views. But if you come for the golf, I think you are likely to be disappointed.

A must for any golfer

Painswick is an all round quirky course.

Considering it has no irrigation system the green were surprisingly well maintained given the 2022 dry weather.

This is a course which beats me up almost every time I play but I insist of making the trek every year. This is a fantastic course but to lose your focus because their is walkers, ramblers picnic goers and horse riders is to get beaten by the course as is going into a bunker on a standard course.

Althought this marmite course for golfers, this is golf in its rawest form. It is a delight to play and a highly recommend checking out the HairyGolfers course vlog on youtube to get an idea of the course layout before you play.
