marvellous challenge
When we were there it was beautiful weather, we were practically the only golfers on the course but we were joined by walkers, cattle horse-riders, runners and many many hounds.Reviewer Rating

the most value for money
Here is a course with great variety and no bunkers, where every hole is different. It's better if your drives are straight and strong (180 yards). But a load of fun and heaps of laughs.Reviewer Rating

consistently brilliant experience
fairways, greens and tee boxes are all brilliantly maintained. We practically had the course to ourselves this late Monday morning. The rough had been cleared so it was possible to find those balls that bounce off the fairway.Reviewer Rating

Perfect unspoilt day in the cotswold
Here is a course where you simply have to be accurate. No bunkers! Five of us set off at half ten and completed the course by half 2 including lunch break at the 9th tee. Four of us scored 90 or less so a very satisfying day all round.Reviewer Rating

beautiful
A marvellous day on the hills; never mind about the golf! The fairways were well groomed anfd the greens were as fast as they come.tees were well cut and so long as we stayed on the fairway everything was fine. However, off to the left, right overshoot tended to be lost ball in some thick growth!Reviewer Rating

put on your crampons and take your ice ick
This is a rough course to walk around with a trolley. The paths are somewhat narrow and rocky and steep. If you stick to the fairways the grass is well groomed and the greens are marvellous A round to remember.Reviewer Rating

Awesome little course
I love the course & when a hole goes wrong I hate it..The staff are always helpful.
Greens were in excellent condition, the course is looking fantastic.
I do think everyone should play golf here at least once, I appreciate it is a marmite course. You'll love it or hate it.
I come here once or twice a year.
I don't think being public land is an issue if the people using the area were vaguely educated in golf.
A family picnic on a fairway probably isn't safe.
I did talk to them and they seemed unaware that it was a golf course, despite being situated between two holes on a shared fairway... The course isn't busy....

One of the finest and most interesting courses in England. This course offers breathtaking views and a captivating variety of holes, some with blind shots, some with elevated or lowered pins, some with sunken and tilted greens, and one of the best par 3s in the country, the 5th hole. It’s short but demands that you hit it straight, so don’t think it’s a pushover. A joy to play and the clubhouse is very welcoming.Reviewer Rating

Great fun- you must play
What a great experience it is to play Painswick. It’s short, 7 par 3’s, rocky paths and people wandering all over the course, but......It’s such fun. Lots of really interesting holes with the requirement to shape shots and think your way round the course. I was fortunate to play it with someone who knew their way round, without that I can see why you might get frustrated as Finding your way round might be a challenge. Loved the elevated tees, the blind Par 3’s played over all sorts of ancient earthworks, the amazing views from the tees and greens near the beacon.
The only downside to the round was that the 3rd hole was out of play because some total scumbag has vandalised the green with what looks like a motorbike. It just baffles me why someone would go to all that trouble to destroy something?
If you are looking for golf with a clear line of sight to landing areas and all hazards visible, and a traditional par 72, then this course probably isn’t for you.
But, If you want a round where the golf is different from anything you will play normally, and each tee brings a new smile to your face, then don’t miss Painswick..
The clubhouse is nice as well, with welcoming and helpful staff.
Well done Painswick - Loved you!,

Painswick golf course has multiple aspects. I will start off with the negatives, which will probably sound harsher than what they are intended. The walkers which are entitled to walk freely around the course sometimes show little consideration to the golfer who is about to drive off. That said many are amazing and one helped me find a lost ball. Small children or dog walkers were randomly playing in the middle of the fairway (probably quite a safe ball but we did find ourselves waiting while place to be considering how I played), which can slow play down. Because there are many dog walkers on that course there are quite a few dog turds around the course both o natural and in bags which is rather unpleasant. I played this course midweek in the August and the course was very quiet, however I can imagine it being very cramped on weekends and it being off putting and rushed on shared fairways which cross or run parallel on some holes. Trolleys are also not really useable and I would recommend you carry your bag of sticks.
Now the good stuff. The members, staff and ramblers were all very friendly and we had some lovely chats to them, which you don’t often get at some golf courses. The views are breathtaking at the 6th tee on the top of the Painswick beacon is amazing, you can see for miles over Gloucester and beyond. I got my camera out and took many photos and we forgot about golf for 5 minutes (there was one or two other golfer on the course). As a general rule there are a few lovely views on this course. The terrain is rough though with massive undulation which is extremely challenging for the novice golfer who finds his ball lost in the long grass, wild flowers and bushes. The golf holes are extremely well designed with multiple blind holes shooting over tuff walls or into “bowls” along quarries. The web site is very use full giving a description of the holes and each hole has its own name. It also states that some holes appear in a book which lists the top 100 holes in the UK, which I can certainly believe now I have played it. I will quote my friend who I played “if a general course had two or three holes as good as Painswick golf course then it would be considered a good course”. Each hole was very different even the two par 5s which shared the same fairway were considerably different from each other. Many times on my local courses, it feels like I play the same hole on a different part of the course, but here each hole at Painswick golf course is unique. There is rarely a forgiving tee shot and you must be a consistent hitting of the ball. Multiple times I had to hit three from the tee, this course punishes the inconsistent player but it was a lot of fun. The greens were firm but fair and in good condition but not the best I have played on locally (South Gloucestershire). This is an excellent mature course which a single figure handicap player will flourish on, however my unofficial handicap of 15 was pummelled to shooting 33 over par, mainly due to penalty strokes to losing balls from the tee. This course has great value for money at £15 a round and I will certainly be playing here again. Going back to my more local golf courses is going to seem relatively boring now.
