The course is built on clay, so this causes a number of problems e.g. when wet, the rain doesn't drain away as quickly as at some courses, and when dry (as it was Summer of 2018), cracks can appear, but this year was bad at all the local courses as well. Because of the weather this year, the 6 bunkers which were re-designed last winter have (all but one) only just been re-turfed. These will remain GUR to let the turf settle in, so there is no sand in the new bunkers yet. The course is rarely quiet, and at one time was the busiest course in the country!! There is therefore a lot of footfall, and so the greens are kept quite slow so allow for this. The layout is interesting enough, and the large number of trees planted over the years is now coming to fruition, making it a lot more picturesque, and tightening up some of the holes. If you haven't played here in a while, it's more challenging than it was when built in 1975. The bar and catering is under new management (since early 2018), so the opening hours for food/drink are not as they used to be, but the food is good (if a little expensive). Visitors should be patient - there is rarely more than a single member of catering staff available, so they are cooking as well as serving your beer! Facilities are tired looking, but I doubt if refurbishment would help - the building has been in place far longer than the original 20 years lifespan that the council intended. There are usually deals to be had, so the price of a round is very good unless you have to pay full price (weekend mornings), when I would say it's getting to be less good value, but probably still competitive to local courses.

This is my home course, and I am therefore baised as I get to see and play it in ALL conditions. The course is built on clay, so after wet weather, there can be lots of muddy patches, and water can accumulate in the bunkers. Once the weather changes though (it was later in 2018) the course becomes a real joy. Recent sunny weather after all the rain means the rough got to be extremely long, but the greenkeepers are getting on top of this, and the course currently looks magnificent. There are currently 6 bunkers out of play, but these should be worked on this month, and although they are not a pretty sight, they are all GUR, so are not really in play. Greens are never particularly quick, but they are usually consistent, so get used to the pace of the practice green by the clubhouse to help your round once you get on the course.

The new bunkers are good but the others are poor. The 5th is a great example. It's like chipping off uneven concrete. Improve the bunkers and it would be a great course.

Great value for the money!

Greens were being treated so not part of this review. The two main gripes revolve around the poor quality sand in many of the bunkers, and the very muddy paths between green and tee. Apart from the many unrepaired pitch marks, not the courses fault, a good course offering a good variety of challenges.

Council owned. Pay as you play.

In good condition for a Council course. Play was slow due to the very mixed standard of the other users. Lack of etiquette, buggies driven over tees, not being called through despite the group 'losing' 2 holes to the group in front of them.

Bring a mattress

To be fair it's a very nice municipal course, well maintained & some deceptively challenging holes, however the general running of the course is currently poor, Saturday morning play is slow down to the medal groups playing like it's the Masters, once your 18 have been completed it's very rare that the bar is fully stocked & more often than not the card machine is not working, shame really as it could be a very good club all round

Course in good shape though greens quite slow. Rough quite deep right up to the fairway which caused a few issues locating balls in it and playing out from.
