Decent course for a municipal

The course is built on clay, so this causes a number of problems e.g. when wet, the rain doesn't drain away as quickly as at some courses, and during very dry summers; cracks can appear on some fairways. During lockdown; there was some animal damage from badgers and crows (pecking for insects on the greens), and this seems to have continued after the course opened and in particular, the badgers seems to like digging up the tees, so occasionally there are signs of this following work by the greenkeepers to rectify the damage.

Because the bunkers got into quite a bad state, a number have been marked as GUR, and will be worked on when sand can be obtained, and the remainder are being played with preferred lies, so your ball should be placed in the bunker and played from your preferred lie. There is an ongoing plan to deal with all the bunkers, but this will take years, with about 5 being dealt with each Winter. This will include reshaping, drainage work, and refilling with sand (when it is available). A number have already been completed, and this has lead to the 17th being bunker free.

The course is rarely quiet, and at one time was the busiest course in the country!! This means you should check that you are not following a Society, which can make it a slow round. There is also a lot of footfall, and so the greens are kept quite slow; so you should allow for this.

The layout is interesting enough, and the large number of trees planted over the years is now coming to fruition, making it a lot more picturesque, and tightening up some of the holes. If you haven't played here in a while, it's a lot more challenging than it was when built in 1975.

The bar and catering changed management in early 2018, so the opening hours for food/drink are not as they used to be, so usually the opening hours only start at 10.00am, and continue until 5.00pm. This changes during the Winter, so you may want to check if you are planning to stay for food after your round. The food is good (if a little expensive). Visitors should be patient - there is rarely more than a single member of catering staff working, so they are cooking as well as serving your beer obviously they put on more staff for Societies and the weekends!

The building is tired looking, but I doubt if refurbishment would help - it has been in place far longer than the original 20 years lifespan that the council intended. Having said that, there are full changing facilities including showers, a small putting green, a chipping area a short walk from the clubhouse, a covered 13 bay driving range, and 3 glass backed squash courts if your golf day is a wash-out!

looking good after lockdown

The course is built on clay, so this causes a number of problems e.g. when wet, the rain doesn't drain away as quickly as at some courses, and when, during very dry summers; cracks can appear on some fairways. The complex was ?locked down? for a lot of 2020 because of Covid19, and then it got very wet over the Winter from December 2020 to March 2021. Now in April 2021,the course has dried considerably, but there was some animal damage during lockdown (badgers and crows digging up the greens and tees).

The bunkers remain out of play (as at April 2021), and will be treated as GUR whilst there are no rakes due to Covid19. 4 bunkers (2 greenside at 3 and 17, and 2 fairway on 12 and 16 all of which have never drained well) have been filled in during the Winter, and turf is on order to complete their refurbishment.

The course is rarely quiet, and at one time was the busiest course in the country!! This means you should check that you are not following a Society, which can make it a slow round. There is also a lot of ?footfall?, and so the greens are kept quite slow; so you should allow for this.

The layout is interesting enough, and the large number of trees planted over the years is now coming to fruition, making it a lot more picturesque, and tightening up some of the holes. If you haven't played here in a while, it's a lot more challenging than it was when built in 1975.

The bar and catering changed management in early 2018, so the opening hours for food/drink are not as they used to be, but until the law allows, the catering facilities are closed. You should check the opening times before travelling, as this is very odd times due to Covid19, but if being served; the food is good (if a little expensive). Visitors should be patient - there is rarely more than a single member of catering staff working, so they are cooking as well as serving your beer (when allowed) - obviously they put on more staff for Societies and the weekends!

The course is built on clay, so this causes a number of problems e.g. when wet, the rain doesn't drain away as quickly as at some courses, and when dry (as it was Summer of 2018), cracks can appear, but that year was bad at all the local courses as well. The course recovered extremely well following the drought of 2018 and during 2019 Summer looked great. Now we have started 2020, the wet weather over the past 3 months has left the course looking quite poor, but it has remained open despite the wet ground. Preferred lies is in place throughout the course (the R&A term is ?Through the green? meaning everywhere except hazards), which means you can pick clean and place your ball, and so give yourself every chance at playing a good shot, and of course you get relief from casual water, although on wetter days, finding a dry spot could be difficult.

A number of bunkers are being re-designed each winter with the 6 done in early 2019 having been re-turfed and stocked with new sand. Work has not yet started on the ones which will be done this winter, as it has been too wet to get a digger on the course presumably. The older bunkers seem to lack a decent amount of sand, or what sand there is could do with a god churn up to loosen it after heavy rains.

The course is rarely quiet, and at one time was the busiest course in the country!! This means you should check that you are not following a Society, which can make it a slow round. There is also a lot of ?footfall?, and so the greens are kept quite slow; so you should allow for this.

There are usually deals to be had, so the price of a round is very good unless you have to pay full price (weekend mornings), when I would say it's getting to be less good value, but probably still competitive to local courses. Buggies are available at ?22 per round (Summer 2019), but are not allowed during Winter.

This is my home course, and I am therefore baised as I get to see and play it in ALL conditions. The course is built on clay, so after wet weather, there can be lots of muddy patches, and water can accumulate in the bunkers. Once the weather changes though (it was later in 2018) the course becomes a real joy. Recent sunny weather after all the rain means the rough got to be extremely long, but the greenkeepers are getting on top of this, and the course currently looks magnificent. There are currently 6 bunkers out of play, but these should be worked on this month, and although they are not a pretty sight, they are all GUR, so are not really in play. Greens are never particularly quick, but they are usually consistent, so get used to the pace of the practice green by the clubhouse to help your round once you get on the course.

Great value municipal course

Just starting Autumn, and the course was prepared well for the Club Championships at the beginning of September. Hollow-coring followed by top-dressing has now taken place, so the greens will settle down during the rest of September. Course is playing well, but lots of rain and sunshine means the rough is quite long, and can cause delays to play if you are at all wayward.

The course is built on clay, so any rain leaves some standing water on the course. However, the greenkeepers are working well to keep this to a minimum, and drainage work will be on-going throughout the winter months. Some changes to bunkering last winter will be followed by further changes in the coming months, which will again give the opportunity to improve drainage, as well as making the course look better.

The course was rather busy on a Friday and the round took 4 hours (as a single player who joined with a two for the last 8 holes). The course is straight forward, everything you need to see is in front of you. The tees were in decent condition, the fairways were green, the greens looked quick but actually were a fraction slower than I expected, importantly the greens rolled well. There are a few walks to the next tee, all are well signposted. The 17th is a good par 3 with a big drop down to the green. The clubhouse was welcoming and served a good sandwich and chips.

Enjoyed playing the course, forgiving fairways helped a high handicapper!
Entrance to the driving range, with a trolley, was very strange and multiple doors / steps - this needs to be re-thought from a customer experience perspective. Groupon = excellent value for money

Recently taken over from Council by a private company so likely to change but the course is open and more suited to a high handicapper and the fairways are good. The greens are poor however and were left open all winter which didn't do them much good. The green fees are very competitive and overall very good value for money.
