In need of some TLC

Visited this course in Bedford utilizing a voucher - a 90 minute journey. We were a two ball and arrived well before our tee time time of 1300. Both of us had a full breakfast with a drink, (cost at ?10 per person) which we thought rather expensive. Practice facilities were good with a driving range with a variation of cost for balls, we found the ?2 sufficient for or needs. Rather small putting green to practice on. The Pro Shop was scantily stocked but offered a drink if required. The staff were friendly in both the bar and Pro shop. So off to the course, set off 30 mins before our tee time - unfortunately behind a society of 30 and hence a slow round lasting nearly 5 hours. Overall the tee boxes were OK, but needed a cut, likewise the fairways also required a cut, it was often difficult to decipher fairway from the 1st cut. The greens really let this course down, on numerous occasions we were putting over a pitted surface with no true run. Bunkers had fine sand in them although a number were GUR. Overall the course is OK for beginners and society and has the feel of an old municipal course. I enjoyed the round, although painfully slow and unfortunately, i do not recollect a memorable hole or signature hole on this course that stood out among the rest, there are no water hazards either. We will not be rushing back to play but ticks a box.

Lovely Course

Great greens and fairways but leaves can be a problem when not collected.

The course is built on clay, so this causes a number of problems e.g. when wet, the rain doesn't drain away as quickly as at some courses, and when dry (as it was Summer of 2018), cracks can appear, but this year was bad at all the local courses as well. Because of the weather this year, the 6 bunkers which were re-designed last winter have (all but one) only just been re-turfed. These will remain GUR to let the turf settle in, so there is no sand in the new bunkers yet. The course is rarely quiet, and at one time was the busiest course in the country!! There is therefore a lot of footfall, and so the greens are kept quite slow so allow for this. The layout is interesting enough, and the large number of trees planted over the years is now coming to fruition, making it a lot more picturesque, and tightening up some of the holes. If you haven't played here in a while, it's more challenging than it was when built in 1975. The bar and catering is under new management (since early 2018), so the opening hours for food/drink are not as they used to be, but the food is good (if a little expensive). Visitors should be patient - there is rarely more than a single member of catering staff available, so they are cooking as well as serving your beer! Facilities are tired looking, but I doubt if refurbishment would help - the building has been in place far longer than the original 20 years lifespan that the council intended. There are usually deals to be had, so the price of a round is very good unless you have to pay full price (weekend mornings), when I would say it's getting to be less good value, but probably still competitive to local courses.

Shame

Used to be such a good municipal but now it's a shame the effort is not there anymore, GUR untouched for that long it's now got grass growing back, bunkers are poor, greens aren't what they were & staff are disinterested.

This is my home course, and I am therefore baised as I get to see and play it in ALL conditions. The course is built on clay, so after wet weather, there can be lots of muddy patches, and water can accumulate in the bunkers. Once the weather changes though (it was later in 2018) the course becomes a real joy. Recent sunny weather after all the rain means the rough got to be extremely long, but the greenkeepers are getting on top of this, and the course currently looks magnificent. There are currently 6 bunkers out of play, but these should be worked on this month, and although they are not a pretty sight, they are all GUR, so are not really in play. Greens are never particularly quick, but they are usually consistent, so get used to the pace of the practice green by the clubhouse to help your round once you get on the course.
