Trying to be something it’s not
I’ve played at ESN many times and enjoy the courses but it’s clinging onto the fact it hosted some European tour events 30 years ago and still thinking they can charge £££ for average condition golf courses however today I encountered rules I thought were long gone in golf. I arrived with my 14 year old daughter who is now showing an interest in golf so I thought we’d go to the range at ESN and maybe use the excellent practice facilities. I went into the pro shop to buy a token and was looked up and down and told I had to be wearing proper golf attire to use the range?! I was wearing a t-shirt and golf shorts but apparently for ESN that’s not good enough. When I asked why I was told ‘that’s the rules’ in a way that’s suggests that’s common practice for any driving range. I’ve played golf all over the world at some excellent venues and NEVER heard of that. I played at Gleneagles last week and used the range whilst wearing a similar outfit and they couldn’t have been more friendly yet this time pot dinosaur of a club doesn’t want to promote golf as a fun, relaxed sport for everyone, it wants to think this is still the 1970s and we should all be wearing plus 4’s and jackets. Such a shame I wasn’t allowed to practice with my daughter. I will never go back.Reviewer Rating

course ok resort awful
We went for the all inclusive golf and dinner option. On arrival the room was not very clean, balcony was filthy with huge cobwebs, and a filthy table.Dinner was the worst resort dinner i have ever experienced. Three mains to choose from braised beef and mash, pasta and a mushroom sauce and the smallest piece of fish with over cooked vegetables - we gave it back. Dessert had ice cream which was made from powder - we gave it back. The contents of the meals could not have cost more than £2.5
We asked to se the restaurant manager who was apparently busy but would come soon to see us , we finally left when he did not show up and though we left our room number for him to contact us we were never contacted.
We managed to negotiate to skip dinner the second day in exchange for a burger and a sandwich. Hardly a great deal for us , but i would never try dinner there again.
Front of house staff were very friendly,
Course was a good layout , but needed some TLC, bare fairways and rough meant we played prefer lies in June.
Overall a really poor place to go......

Too Muddy
This course should have been closed. The greens were in bad shape and the course was way too muddy basically unplayable if not on fairway.(Round played: Dec 2020 - Score: 96 Handicap: 16.5)

Mud Bath - terrible greens
This course has drainage issues, it was a mud bath. Balls disappear into the mud on every hole. The greens were in very poor condition with hollotining depressions on all of them. Might be a good summer course but avoid this course in the winter. The course should have been closed, but they will take your money in any case.(Round played: Dec 2020 - Score: 97 Handicap: 15)

We played sun 7th april and the greens on both courses are very scrabby....and the fairways pretty poor as well. sad as its been let go from when we played it a couple of years ago ...the east course is extremely boring. the west is a lot more fun and great holes in fairness but conditioning is not good. i play a lot in sussex and its been a hard winter for lots of courses but most are better looked after and turning good now this is not the case here. pro shop has great stock .Reviewer Rating

Weekend Break
Our annual break to ESN was booked when Lockdown was lifted. Despite only being able to get late tee times for Saturday and sunday we felt the previous visits where we were very impressed warranted this irritation. Leading up to our weekend we did try and get earlier times but were firmly told "We are fully booked". We decided to get there at 11am on the Saturday and have Lunch before we checked in and played. when trying to check in we were told there was no booking on the system but luckily we had the paper work to prove otherwise, at this point we were told they had had a system problem were they had lost some Bookings :-(The East course greens were poor by ESN standards and the rough was thick and juicy. On many holes there was no semi rough which made the course even more challenging. The west course was the same other than the greens were in Better condition.
if you have been here before you might be a little disappointed if its your first time you might not be overly impressed.
finally, the staff were not back to there best and seemed a bit slow on a few occasions

Disappointed
Looks impressive on arrival. Main hotel great and rooms superb lounge and bar did feel like waiting in an airport. Meals were good quality but lack of choice. Played both course. First day championship east. Thought condition of fairways and greens very poor. We were told to play pick and place. Off white tees not really that difficult. Expected more. Second day played west course. Far superior and a lot harder. Course in better nick but not perfect. Greens not very slick. Really need to play this 18 couple times. Course management vital playing these holes. Due to COVID bunkers were poor and some were GUR. East Sussex has a good reputation so I expected higher standards so overall disappointedReviewer Rating

Not in best condition
Despite a mild winter the course was not in best of condition. Some tees rough, some fairways soggy, all greens bumpy and some with moss infestation. Bit like the curates egg - good in parts.(Round played: Mar 2019 - Score: 105 Handicap: 24.3)

Six hour rounds!
Two rounds of golf that took nearly 6 Hours each! This spolit our visit.* Something is wrong with booking admin, when it allows multiple, 4-ball, groups of geriatric, very high handicap 'golfers' to tee-off in consecutive groups in the middle of the day, thus grinding play to a virtual halt
* There are marshalls, but no attempt made to manage the logjam by touring the course by buggy and intervening
* Why is it not possible to allocate slow moving high handicap groups the post 3pm twilight tee times?
