Really poor Golf Course

Parking available in the social club car park, a walk along a road with cars and trucks milling past you at 40 mph. Particularly concerning with junior members.

Very poor practice green and driving cage, the chipping green is not too bad. 12 hole course, with 18 hole rounds causes problems when busy. A lack of etiquette from members including club level members seen over the 18 months of playing, including approach to junior members on the course and level of tracksuits and players ‘practicing’ on the course.

Various dog shows on at the Social club and together with the Drax biomass trains running adjacent, it’s anything but peaceful.

Recently the hearts fencing on various holes have been removed, together with the mound of hardcore that you needed to cross to get to a tee box, it’s all akin to a building site.

The summer it’s busy, those leaving the 12th to play the 1st as the 13th can be hostile, and it required the GC to state that those on the 1st tee had priority. Again, issues with large groups and those not on the BRS on the course, those who just jibbed in.

The winter it is a write off, a nightmare well hidden.
Best avoided. Much better and welcoming courses around in North and East Yorkshire.

Fairways terrible

Played at Drax in early Autumn after the hot summer and the greens were in fantastic condition but the fairways were terrible completely bald in several areas and very very patchy they had obviously been cut far too short during the drought and had basically died off bad

Good Course, Bad Timing

First time trying the course and fairly new to golf, overall course is great if a little compact, the 18 is played over only 12/13 holes so you double over yourself a few times and it can be a little confusing which hole is next due to the layout. However the holes themselves are great, some down and uphill holes look great and really add to the challenge. We went at start of April and course could do with a few touch ups before the busy summer period i think, a few temp greens on some holes drag it down, with these temp greens not being maintained very well or of a suitable size, a bad end to some great holes. It says to check in at the bar before you start but we were told we didnt need to, instead walk to the course and have proof of purchase in case a course guide asks us.

Some Temp out of bound areas marked by wire construction fencing takes away from the look of some holes and the course overall, but i'd say in summer when hopefully all the greens are back in action, the other issues shouldnt be an issue, be sure to scout the course using apps and the guide beforehand as we needed it to find our way a few times. Will definitely be back but not straight away, it makes good use out of a small space for a good variety of courses, but the small space does bring its own issues. However for the price as (we got a hot deal of £20 in total for 2 people) cant really grumble too much.

Enjoyed it again, friendly and quirky

Second time we've played here as a society and it is one of the friendliest courses in the area. Always enthusiastic and helpful people on site to start your day off nicely. Course was exactly the same with the same issues around playing some holes twice but it didn't really impact too much. The free drop GUR around makes some holes too easy and the greens were a bit uneven in places. Overall another enjoyable experience and we will return I am sure !

Nice course, could be better

We had been recommended to this course and as we were mid COVID rules, we thought we would try it. The staff there were so helpful and really welcoming. The course itself was really nice, but there is a large amount of GUR close to the fairways which is a free drop and makes it too easy on some holes as you can smash the ball anywhere and its a free drop. Some holes you play twice which resulted in some near misses as the different tee positions for the same hole arent necessarily looking at each other (if you are new the course). Having said that, some lovely holes and on a blazing hot day it suited our needs. Although I enjoyed it, I probably won't play it again.

It's tricky to comment when there's no comparable course or club that I know of. It's a challenging and interesting 12-hole course where accuracy is key, so not suited to simple long hitters.
Club insists on fairway mats or tees in winter, which is over-protective and doesn't allow visitors to play realistic golf. Similarly, the club resorts too readily to temporary greens and tees and the course is too often closed after rain. Leaves are a horrendous problem in autumn despite the seniors section apparently engaged on frequent clearance.
I wouldn't join this club simply because winter golf is so limited, it'd be impossible to get value; that's a shame, as it's a very attractive course when fully open and playable. I've filed it under 'summer only' for future trips.

Tough track

I'm a member here. It's a very tight tough course. A real test for players of all abilities. A lot of work going on at the moment to improve further an already good course. Even course knowledge can't help you some days. Still needs a few more trees out but I'm told that's happening soon. If you're thinking of trying it for the first time I recommend going with a member who can give you tips on where to aim

Lovely course spoilt by 2 members

My son and I visited Drax for the first time, we had spoken to a couple of staff who were extremely friendly and provided some good advice. Unfortunately we were approached by two club members on the 12th, one of them said he was the president although I think he meant Captain, they bluntly told us we were incorrectly dressed and that there was a very strict dress code. We explained that we hadn't been informed of this by any member of staff but what really upset us was the way these 2 club members spoke to us. If this golf club wants to attract more members especially the younger generation then I suggest the captain and the members of the club take a look at how the staff in the social club and the green keepers treat the paying public. The staff were welcoming and friendly and it's only because of the staff that we will return to play again.

Really interesting and tricky course... I thought it was going to be a like a 9-hole pitch and putt...but boy was I wrong! This is a very tight and well kept course...and is actually now a 12 hole course..with different tees on some holes to create 18 holes... I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the greens as well..some of the best I've played on in Yorkshire..but it was summer so I guess they were at the best then. Overall a surprisingly good and difficult course...especially for the price.

Having played the course on several occasions, it has warmed to me. There are quite a few holes that are risk and reward holes, giving you the oppertunity from the tee,to decide weather you wish to go for it ,"so to speak" the first two holes are driveable, but you have to be very accurate, I just hit 2 Iron,& wedge, for savety, on each occasion. You will actually play the first two holes again on the back nine, the first from a slightly different angle. With this course being only 12 holes, you will play the, 1st,2nd,5th,6th,7th,& 9th,twice, however the 7th becomes a par5 on the second loop. The course which had been a 9 hole configeration initally,It has had 3 new holes added, all of which merit respect. Overall if you hit fairly straight and can hold your nerve, its well worth a visit.I would gladly recommend it.

A remarkable surprise

When someone mentions the word "Drax", a golf club probably isn't the first thing most think of. Nestled in the shadow of a major UK power station, Drax Golf Club really lives up to it's nickname as "Yorkshire's Hidden Gem".

The course is meticulously maintained by a small team of greenkeepers and volunteers who clearly love their golf course. The greens as are close to USGA as you could get without the actual foundations to use the name. Some would even say 'perfect', even the flattest greens take a good read to get the right putt.

It's evident the club are investing wisely in their future with new drainage added to holes 2, 6 and 7 in recent years.

This is clearly a club going from strength to strength and a must play in the Yorkshire region.

Having recently enjoyed a fantastic round at Drax Golf Club, I can wholeheartedly recommend it to any visitor looking for a truly enjoyable golfing experience. From the moment I first enquired about a tee time, the positive tone was set. The admin staff, including the Chairman himself, were incredibly helpful and accommodating, making the booking process seamless and friendly – a real rarity these days!\\The course itself is a delight. The layout offered a good mix of holes, giving a fair challenge and plenty of opportunities for good shots. What really stood out was the conditioning. The fairways were great, the greens were true and a joy to putt on, despite some bobbly from recent hollow timing. The general presentation of the course was satisfying, especially the flower beds around the 1st tee and behind the 6th green. Even interacting with the greens staff on the course was a pleasure; they were courteous and clearly took immense pride in their work.\\Drax, in my opinion, is worth the visit. It\'s a testament to the dedication of the entire team, from the administrative staff to the greens keepers, that they deliver such a high-quality experience. I left feeling thoroughly satisfied and already planning my next visit.
