Intriguing, Fiendish, BEAUTIFUL!!
Beckside is one of those rare courses you happen upon by accident that proves to be something genuinely special.Built by the owner, a farmer called Michael Jackson (!) around 25 years ago, the course is carved out of a natural Lake District hillside in 2 roughly triangular shapes - their points meeting in the middle. 6 hols in bottom triangle / 3 holes in top.
The longest hole is only 340 and there are 9 par 3s and 9 par 4s but don't let that deceive you. Firstly you're playing on seriously steep hillsides and secondly there is the wind to factor in. A full drive might only travel 200 yards before hitting the hillside and stopping dead.
There are no bunkers (Lake District planning conditions) yet the greens are in really good condition. Some are flat but most are fiendishly contoured, making for some fun putting!
Michael and another family member upkeep the course themselves with all the love and devotion of a mad keen golfer. There is no clubhouse (hence the lower rating scores from some reviewers) and you pay at the farm house a mile or so down the lane. It's almost an honesty system!
I have played many smaller course around the world and this is right up there in my top 3 without a shadow of doubt. It helps to play round in 8 over off a 19 HC but it was just one of those great days of golf.
I'll play Beckside everytime I visit the Lakes and recommend you do too!

A place in my heart
This course will always hold a special place in my heart, I have played some of the best courses in the UK and Europe but this little gem of a course is superb. It's about £10 to play 18 holes, you have to pay your green fees at the neighbouring owners farm, it has an incredibly homely feel to it too.
With such a small space and harsh terrains they have made this into an awesome 9 hole course that I return to yearly with my old man as part of a nostalgic trip and also, probably the most tiring game of golf of my life.
The extremely steep downhill 5/14th is my personal favourite, you'll want around 10 attempts as it's so much fun.
If you're in the Lakes, then visit this club, even if you only go round once!
