La Manga Seve DayMembers and guests at La Manga Club joined forces to raise in excess of €2,000 for the Severiano Ballesteros Foundation at a new annual charity tournament held in honour of the golfing legend at the five-star Spanish resort.

More than 100 golfers took part in the ‘Seve Golf Day’, which included 18 holes on the Spanish resort’s famed South Course and culminated with a lavish buffet and BBC TV sports presenter Dougie Donnelly presenting the prizes to the winners.

Each competitor received a goody bag which included a hand-painted poster of Ballesteros, with Kenneth Olerenshaw, Andy McGill, Pedro Diaz, Oliver Driscoll and Narciso Conesa took the top honours in the men’s competitions while Begoña Atley, Conchita Gómez Palmero and Dorothea Gemmacher won the main prizes in the ladies’ events.

Ballesteros had a long-standing association with La Manga Club, making his European Tour debut there as a 17-year-old in the 1974 Spanish Open – one of five successive years the resort held the prestigious tournament.

The European Tour legend was the resort’s touring professional from 1980-85, when he won three of his five Major titles, and his son Javier continued the family’s association with La Manga Club by playing in the Spanish International Amateur Championship in February.

Gary Silcock, director of golf at La Manga Club, said: “It was a memorable day for everyone that took part. Many old stories about Seve were exchanged and the event was a great way to honour the memory of one of golf’s true superstars.

“Seve Ballesteros played a major role in establishing La Manga Club as a top European sports venue. He loved his association with the resort and we’re hoping that the event will grow in popularity and will be the first of many.”

With facilities including three 18-hole championship courses, a nine-hole academy course and extensive practice facilities, La Manga Club is regarded as one of Europe’s premier sports destinations.

The resort boasts unrivalled facilities as a sports and leisure venue which also include a 28-court tennis academy and a 2,000m² spa and fitness centre. In addition, La Manga Club offers the choice of a five-star hotel, four-star serviced apartments and townhouses, more than 20 bars and restaurants and great fun for families.
