FootGolf - Something New in the Golf World

By: Adam Smith | Wed 26 Jun 2013

FootGolfThere is a bit of a new craze sweeping through the golf world at the moment but it’s certainly not what you’d think.

FootGolf is becoming more readily available with courses opening around the country and the interest in competing is getting bigger and bigger as word spreads.

Very similar to golf in that the aim of the game is to get your ball into the hole is the least amount of strokes possible.

The courses available have been adapted from actual golf courses or similar open spaces where a course can be mapped out as the distance from tee to green can be flexible according to the playing area available.

Just like golf, FootGolf is very addictive and very fun to play as it combines both golf and football and still requires a high amount of skill to play. They key to being a good FootGolf player is having a mixture of power and precision with the added feel that you’d have with a golf club.

The first affiliated FootGolf course in the UK was the course at One Stop Golf in Hull designed to test every players ability whether young, old or professional.  Each of the 9 holes on the course are designed differently similar to regular golf with a mix of bunkers , water hazards and even three tier greens.

The course is open for general play and they also run one of the major leagues to play in, here in the UK and has been constructed using all weather synthetic tees and greens to allow continuous play throughout the year.

We spoke to Ben Rozenbroek who commented on FootGolf:

"FootGolf is fun and exciting and combines the social aspect and elegance of Golf with the world's passion for Soccer. This brilliant idea will allow sportsmen to share their competitive spirit with their friends and family and the fact that strength and endurance are not the key factors to winning make FootGolf a game for every man, woman, and child"

The first ever FootGolf event  held in America was on July 22 2012 at the Chula Vista Resort, Wisconsin, USA where 24 players took part representing various leagues from around the World.

UK representative Mike O’Conner finished third and took home the bronze medal.

In June of the same year, FootGolf hosted its first ever World Cup in Budapest, Hungary where local fan favourite Bela Lengyel became the sports first World champion.
