Mid Price Drivers Review

By: | Mon 11 Jun 2012

The mid-Price point driver market has suffered in recent years with many of the top end brands dropping prices in order to compete in a high pressured market. There are however a few brands that have weathered the storm thanks to excellent product design and great value.

Golfshake have taken an unbiased look at the some of the drivers available for prices between £50 -£200.

Benross Quad Speed Driver

Benross have established themselves as a brand that offers top range equipment at great value prices.  Their latest driver arrives in the form of the Benross Quad Speed. The head is striking with a slick black finish on the sole and a white crown.

The 460cc headed driver has been developed by Benross to include different technology depending on the loft and shaft choices. The ‘RIP’ head is 10* and is a traditional construction. The mid-launch 12* ‘HOT’ has a split dual crown and the high-launch 14* ‘MAX’ driver features a large split dual crown.  Each head is specifically suited to different swing types and speeds. The ‘RIP’ is for high club head speeds whereas the ‘HOT’ and ‘MAX’ are suited to slower speeds. In addition the Benross Quad Speed Driver has a highly rated Aldila Voodoo shaft fitted as standard.

Wilson Staff Golf DXI Superlight Driver

The new Wilson Staff DXI Superlight Driver is Wilson’s lightest ever driver! Weighing in at just 269 grams it is a full 50 grams lighter than most drivers on the market. The Superlight has an all black finish, including a sleek black sole and black clubface.

The DXI Superlight combines cup-face head technology, which creates a larger and more forgiving sweet spot with an ultra low MOI. These features along with the lightweight head and shaft make the DXI incredibly easy to swing and helps increase club head speed for longer shots. The lightweight head is coupled with super lightweight Matrix 4.1 shaft. The shaft weighs just 48 grams helping to create even more club head speed.

Nicklaus Golf Airdraw Driver

The Nicklaus Airdraw Driver features a maximum sixed 460ccc head. A high MOI keeps the driver very stable throughout the swing helping to create consistent shots. The head itself is offset which helps control unwanted cut spin and also features an improved sole and side cut design. This slip-stream technology improves aerodynamics and in turn increases club head speeds.

A shaft that has been co-developed with top manufacturer Fujikura comes as standard. The Fujikura weighs just 55 grams which helps reduce the weight of the Airdraw driver and create more club head speed and as a result longer drives.

MD Golf Super Strong

Irish brand MD Golf is now recognised as one of the market leaders in the mid-range golf equipment market. They have won a lot of fans with their clean looks and solid club head design.  The MD Super Strong driver epitomises these qualities. The Super Strong first arrived in 2008 and has been met with approval from all levels of golfers, as result MD has not changed a winning formula and has simply updated the cosmetics on their latest driver which now has a classy matt black finish and a black crown.

The head is a 460cc titanium construction with a classic head design and a low profile for a long and strong ball flight. A constant companion of the Super Strong over the past few years is the UST Proforce shaft and the latest model is no different in using this shaft as well as a UST multi-compound grip.

MD Golf Seve Icon

Shortly before his death Seve Ballesteros joined MD golf as an ambassador and advisor on club head design. As a result the MD Seve Icon range of clubs was born. The latest Seve Icon driver is available in both a traditional black and a modern white finish.

The Seve Icon features a classic head shape with a deep, low centre of gravity and is a 460cc titanium construction. The weight has been move to the perimeter of the head to maximise stability through a high MOI.  The hugely popular UST Proforce shaft is fitted as standard as is the UST multi-compound grip.

Yonex E-Zone Driver

The Yonex E-Zone SD driver has been developed and engineered in Japan to create a high quality and a great looking driver.  A classic head shape is complimented by a sole packed with modern technology and design. The E-Zone SD is aimed at mid- high handicappers and is confidence inspiring to look at with a classic 460cc head.

The deep faced head is constructed with a carbon composite which allows for the centre of gravity to be lowered, this helps to create a long and high ball flight. A titanium muscle in the face has been micro engineered to create a high power clubface with maximum face thinness and a larger sweet spot. A Nanospeed 200 shaft is included as standard and features an advanced titanium/ graphite woven tip. This helps with stability through the hitting area and results in greater shot consistency.
