Golfers Spirits Goes Public

By: | Fri 03 Mar 2023

Whighams Wine Bar and Boris Lietzow - owner of Jack White Hickory Golf Shop in Gullane - are thrilled to announce a collaborative project that will bring golfing spirits to your kitchen.

The partnership was developed through their connected love for hickory golf, with Whighams Wine Bar named after Henry James Whigham - a professional Scottish golfer who triumphed in the 1896 and 1897 U.S Amateur.

Background of Golfers Spirits

The duo realised they had one unique interest in common: they both adore hickory golf.

As they took to the fairways one afternoon, iconic figures throughout the history of the sport were discussed passionately.

After that conversation, Boris and Nicholas Henderson (owner of Whighams Wine Bar) decided to commemorate past legends by creating a bottling limited edition whisky in 2019.

That year was of special importance, as it was the 100th anniversary of Walter Hagen’s victory at the 1919 U.S. Open.

The American’s legacy is rightly recorded in the World Golf Hall of Fame, but here are a few of his achievements for those unaware of his magnitude.

Hagen proudly sits in third for the most major championship victories with 12, only bested by Tiger Woods (15) and Jack Nicklaus (18).

His unique and warm character exposed golf to the masses, bringing in larger purses, unprecedented endorsements, prestige and publicity to the sport.

Golfers Spirits introductory bottle - dedicated to Hagen - was met with high demand, rapidly selling out their allocated stock.

The two founders of the company also established ‘The Scottish Hickory Tour’ in 2020 that was contested over the Braid Hills.

This has special relevance as they decided upon the historic name of James Braid to front their second limited edition bottle - the James Braid 150th Anniversary.

Braid is another famous name in the sport of golf; allow us to remind you of his accomplishments.

He was a Scottish professional golfer who existed alongside names such as Harry Vardon and John Henry Taylor - who are responsible for the early growth of professional golf.

Braid was a fantastic player who achieved success on a recent basis, best highlighted by his five Open Championship titles.

Furthermore, the Scotsman was also a respected course architect and he was deservedly inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1976.

Hagen’s Second Edition

After a one-year hiatus from Golfers Spirits - where no new spirit was introduced - the duo is returning to the market with an almighty thump.

A second Hagen edition spirit was created during the 100th anniversary of the American’s Open Championship victory at Royal St George’s back in 1922.

Hagen was the first American to win the Open Championship, which speaks volumes about the enviable skill he exhibited.

Closing

With spring looming and the golfing season within touching distance, Golfers Spirits are now offering their third limited edition bottle.

If you would like more information about the product available, you can visit www.hickory-forever.com or www.whighams.com to purchase online.

Additionally, if you’re visiting Gullane Golf Club, then the Old Clubhouse will be stocking the limited edition whisky.
