Finca Cortesin Prepares for Next Chapter

By: Golfshake Editor | Fri 03 Mar 2017

Celebrated Spanish golf resort and three-time venue of the Volvo World Match Play Championship, Finca Cortesin (Feature Review) is set to etch another chapter in its prestigious history, following the appointment of MiguelMiguel Girbés as its new director.

Girbés will bring a wealth of experience with him to his new position at the deluxe Andalucian venue after spending the last seven-and-a-half years in leading roles at PGA Catalunya Resort in Girona.

The Spaniard, who took up his post at the start of last month, arrives at Finca Cortesin at an exciting time with the exclusive resort undergoing a significant investment programme in 2017 designed to maintain and enhance its five-star facilities on and around the golf course.

Among the many improvements taking place, an ambitious green renovation project will see the introduction of a new, environmentally-friendly, UltraDwarf Bermuda grass – the first golf course in Spain with this variety.

In addition, work will be carried out to improve the quality of the bunkers on the par-72 layout, while the renovation programme will also include an upgrade of Finca Cortesin’s driving range and state-of-the-art Jack Nicklaus Golf Academy, and the purchase of a new fleet of Club Car golf buggies, complete with the latest GPS technology.

Girbés said: “To be given the chance to oversee the development of one of the biggest names in European golf is a great honour and I’m very excited about the challenge that lies ahead.

“Finca Cortesin already has a deserved reputation for delivering outstanding facilities and service to its guests, and I believe that the improvements that will take place over the coming months will help elevate the customer experience to an even higher level.”

Opened in March 2009 and set across a vast 532-acre estate, Finca Cortesin, which hosted the Volvo World Match Play Championship in 2009, 2011 and 2012, is regarded among Europe’s most exclusive modern golf and lifestyle destination resorts.

And the resort has appointed market-leading marcomms agency The Azalea Group to enhance its push into the UK and Europe, overseeing a concentrated long-term campaign which will engage golfers across print, digital, social and event platforms.

Girbés added: “We are delighted to be partnering with Azalea, a company we have been aware of for several years for their great work in our industry. We have been impressed by their enthusiasm and vision, and we look forward to working closely with the Azalea team to further strengthen our international reputation.”

Located in the rolling hills of southern Spain between Marbella and Sotogrande, with the Mediterranean to one side and the tranquil Casares Mountains to the other, Finca Cortesin’s other world-class facilities include an elegant 67-suite hotel, Hotel Cortesin, a 6,000sqm Beach Club and an award-winning spa featuring Spain’s only snow cave, with bespoke treatments by French beauty brand Boilogique Recherche.

Hotel Cortesin offers the choice of four restaurants including El Jardin de Lutz, serving authentic Spanish cuisine, and the Michelin-starred signature Japanese restaurant Kabuki Raw. The development also features an exclusive collection of villas which are available for purchase or rental.
