What The Club Says
Waterloo Course - This picturesque and mature course takes you through woodland and parkland and features several trademark holes. A birdie opportunity awaits you on the very first hole of the Waterloo course, a lengthy par five which requires an accurate tee shot as a dry ditch traverses the fairway. Water is a challenge on the course too, especially at the par three 5th where a lake guards the tilted green. The front 9 is deemed to be the easier of the two. Try to make your score and then hang on through the back 9 holes.
Wellington Course - The Wellington course is slightly longer than it's counterpart and consequently offers a different challenge. As the Waterloo, the Wellington course unravels it's way through ancient Hampshire woodland and landscaped parkland. Well tended fairways and manicured greens make both courses a fantastic golfing experience.

Let’s start with the driving range, which constantly runs out of balls. When you do manage to get a basket, around 10 of the 30 balls are usually so damaged they could only loosely be described as golf balls. Some look as though they were recovered from the bottom of a lake after 20 years.
The clubhouse isn’t much better. Drink prices are a joke and the new food menu is extortionate. Do they not realise Greggs and McDonald’s are just down the road? The music is also often ridiculously loud—apparently loud music makes people want to eat more? Personally, it just makes me want to eat somewhere else.
Ordering a drink can take forever. One member of staff will be serving while another stands operating the till, rather than both serving and reducing the queue. Don’t forget your armbands either, because the bar is usually swimming in beer and other drinks. The tables are rarely cleared, ketchup and mayonnaise are left outside for hours, and the tables are somehow sticky even first thing in the morning. That almost takes talent.
To be fair, there are some great staff, but they seem to spend half their working lives apologising to members and visitors for things beyond their control. Constantly having to say sorry for management decisions and ongoing problems must be exhausting.
Booking a tee time doesn’t necessarily mean you will play with the people you booked with. You can turn up and find that a random player has been added to your group so the club can squeeze in and sell another tee time. Nothing says “relaxing round of golf” quite like being introduced to a complete stranger on the first tee.
The car park is also a joke. I once parked on the grass verge alongside around nine other cars because of the lack of suitable spaces. A member of staff approached me and rudely demanded that I move, while telling me they had spent “thousands” on the car park. That may be true, but it would be interesting to know what the thousands were spent on, because it certainly wasn’t enough parking spaces. Apparently, the other nine cars were enjoying diplomatic immunity.
The courses themselves are steadily losing their character. If many more trees come down, it will be difficult to continue calling the place Sherfield Oaks. Perhaps “Sherfield Open Space” would be more accurate.
The bunkers are a complete lottery. You never know how much sand you will find—or whether you will find any at all. The two courses even appear to have different types of sand. Some bunkers have rubber lining, others seem to have carpet, and on several holes the lining is clearly visible. Going into a bunker now feels less like a golf shot and more like opening a mystery box.
The sprinkler system has reportedly been unreliable for years and, when it does work, it seems to water only selected areas. Changes were made to holes on the Waterloo Course and then apparently abandoned, leaving stones scattered around that can damage clubs. There are not even adequate ground-under-repair markings, so presumably damaging your club is now part of the course strategy.
I have also witnessed groups being allowed to behave completely unacceptably, including fighting, crashing buggies and parking wherever they wanted. Staff appeared unable to intervene and management was nowhere to be seen. When concerns are raised, they are often dismissed, argued against or ignored, with management sitting behind laptops or disappearing into the office while the younger and lower-paid staff are left to deal with the consequences.
That is what makes it so frustrating: Sherfield Oaks has plenty of friendly members, some excellent staff and the potential to be a genuinely good club. Unfortunately, the current management appears to want premium prices without providing premium standards. The course, facilities, service and general upkeep continue to decline, while the prices continue heading in the opposite direction.

Interesting course and good facilities
Played Waterloo Course which whilst parched is an interesting mix of different length holes with no repeats. Greens excellent. Facilities after golf were excellent tooReviewer Rating

Good course
Course in good nick and not too bare considering the dry weather. Greens true and quite quick.Enjoyable round.
