Played like it needed sun and a few extra green keepers. Just felt unloved.

Unoftunately not very well maintained. Bunkers shabby and the fairways long.
Outside of the club house looking worn, but inside facilities good.
A little disappointing for the €65 paid.
Course could be very good with a little TLC.

we took a range of handicappers from 5 to 28+ and all found the course to be fantastic. the better, longer hitters had their own concerns while the lesser players just wanted to stay on the beautifully manicured fairways. As you would expect the greens were quite fast even when sodden from the torrential rain we endured for the first 11 holes. some standing water on fairways became a bit of a nuisance but cannot blame the club for god's work. A small niggle was the lack of buggies which meant no respite from the rain. As for my round, i think i must have taken water divining balls that day as i put lots in the various water hazards. the magnificent 16th took it's toll as i stood determined to get a ball 170 yds across the Liffey to the famous island green, finally landing my fifth attempt 4 yds from the hole. the round was saved by dropping a 40 foot putt at the 18th in front of a small appreciative gallery, they never knew how many it had taken before.
now for the gripe, EXPENSIVE, i mean really EXPENSIVE. we stayed in the hotel and were shocked to be charged 6 euro's for a standard pint of lager and 5 euro's for a bottle of water. A simple hot dog (just a sausage in a bun no extras) in the clubhouse was 6 euro's. do not forget to take all your own equipment as 2 guys had to buy rain jackets the cheapest one in the clubhouse was 140 euro's for a simple nylon jobbie.
the cost aside it is a fantastic place to play your game.

I played the Palmer course on July 18, 2008 and am in shock and awe at the beauty and difficulty of this magnificent course. But as the previous review noted that it brings out the best, I actually played a very poor round hitting at least a dozen balls into water and therefore 13 over my handicap.

Right up there with the Old Course, Carnoustie, Glen Eagles (all three courses), Kingsbarns and many in the USA. That said, this is still the best course I've ever played.

The other thing noted above "but still you will be unprepared for the ensuing drama" is an understatement. Every shot from every position on this course is a do or die shot, every location on this course is a photographers dream. Sunset over the 18th the day I was there is one of the most stunning landscape photos I've ever taken.

The 7th, 16th and 17th holes are out of this world gorgeous.
